Chapter 9 - The Final ConfrontationJulian turned his head slowly as our footsteps brushed against the carpet. When his eyes locked onto mine—and then drifted to Aunt Beatrice standing beside me in the dim hallway—his face drained of all color.

"Aunt Beatrice?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling as if he were looking face-to-face with a literal phantom. "The... they said you died decades ago. Mother said you passed away in Europe."
"Your mother lies about everything, Julian, just like your grandfather did," Beatrice said, her voice steady and sharp as a razor. "And now you're standing guard outside the door of an innocent child, helping your mother bury another generation of blood. Have you no shame left at all?"
Julian flinched as if he had been physically struck. He looked at me, his eyes swimming with a tortured mixture of guilt, desperation, and agonizing regret.
"Clara," Julian murmured, taking a step toward me. "You shouldn't have come back up here. Mother has already called the private transport. In an hour, you and Lily were supposed to be... relocated. Far away from here."
"Relocated?" I spat the word out like venom, stepping in front of Beatrice defensively. "You were going to make us disappear, just like your grandfather made Arthur disappear! You're no better than him, Julian!"
"What choice did I have?!" Julian suddenly exploded, his voice echoing loudly down the corridor before he caught himself and lowered it to a harsh, desperate whisper. "My entire life has been a lie built on murder! If the truth about Lily's lineage comes out, the foundation destroys everything! I was trying to save you!"
"You weren't saving us, Julian. You were saving your inheritance," I said, my voice cold and absolute. I pushed past him, grabbing the handle of Lily’s bedroom door.
It was unlocked.
I threw the door open and flicked on the bedside lamp.
The bed was empty. The sheets were thrown back, still warm, but Lily was gone.
A strangled cry ripped from my throat. I spun around, grabbing Julian by the collar of his shirt and slamming him against the wall with every ounce of strength I had left.
"Where is she?!" I screamed, tears blinding me. "Where is my daughter?!"
Before Julian could answer, a chilling, triumphant voice echoed from the end of the dark hallway.

"Looking for someone, my dear?"
Eleanor stood at the top of the grand staircase, bathed in the pale moonlight pouring through the skylight. And in her arms, wrapped tightly in a fuzzy blanket, was Lily—sound asleep, completely unaware of the nightmare surrounding her.
