Chapter 7 - The Empire CrumblesWithin forty-eight hours, the illusion of Parker Creative Solutions collapsed like a house of cards built on sand.

With Evelyn’s full cooperation, federal and state investigators subpoenaed every bank record, text message, and corporate email associated with Ryan Parker and Marcus Vance. The investigation revealed that the "medical emergencies" Ryan had staged over the past three years were entirely fabricated. The surgeries were elective cosmetic procedures, high-end vacations to Ibiza, and private poker debts accumulated by Marcus and Ryan in underground Chicago clubs—all funded by Evelyn's retirement savings and unauthorized home equity loans.
Marcus Vance was arrested the next day at the downtown office as federal marshals seized the company assets, locked the doors, and towed the luxury G-Wagon from the private lot. Chloe Miller and the rest of the administrative staff were left stranded outside, scrambling for new jobs as the company accounts were frozen indefinitely.
Ryan, meanwhile, found himself discharged from the hospital straight into a holding cell. Stripped of his designer clothes, his private phone, and his arrogant swagger, he spent his first night in custody realizing that his safety net had permanently vanished.
His cell phone—now sitting confiscated in an evidence locker—buzzed continuously with missed alerts from creditors, landlords, and credit card companies demanding immediate payment. But there was no one left to answer. No frantic mother driving across the city to pay off his debts. No emergency funds waiting in reserve.
Evelyn, on the other hand, was miles away in a high-rise law office overlooking Lake Michigan, signing papers that officially severed every financial link to her son.
Her attorney, a sharp, empathetic woman named Katherine Vance (no relation to Marcus), slid a final document across the mahogany desk.
"The restraining order is filed, Evelyn," Katherine said gently, looking across at her client. "And the trust for your new estate is fully established. With two hundred million dollars secured, your future is entirely untouchable. No one can ever touch your name or your assets again."

Evelyn looked out the floor-to-ceiling window at the sprawling, beautiful city of Chicago glistening beneath the afternoon sun. For the first time in thirty-four years, her shoulders didn't ache with the invisible weight of another person's survival.
She wasn't a rescuer anymore. She was simply Evelyn Parker—free, wealthy, and completely independent.
