Chapter 1 - The Descent

Above her, Evelyn Hawthorne’s voice trembled with a terrifying blend of panic and controlled fury. "Celeste, what did you actually do? Why is she still not moving? Check her pulse right now!"
"I told you, she came at me!" Celeste shrieked, her voice cracking under the sudden weight of the unfolding nightmare. "She tripped! She threw herself down, Evelyn! You know how unstable she’s been since the pregnancy started!"
Mara kept her eyelids sealed. Every fiber of her being screamed to jump up, to scream at Celeste, to expose the cold, calculating lie hanging heavy in the air. But she forced herself to stay limp. She remembered Detective Luis Moreno’s exact instructions whispered over a lukewarm espresso: Let them dig their own graves. The deeper the hole, the harder it is to climb out.
Heavy boots thundered through the front doors. Flashlights cut sharp beams of white light across the vaulted ceiling, sweeping past the grand oil paintings of generations of dead Hawthornes who looked down with stern, unblinking eyes.
"Police! Stay right where you are! Nobody move!"
Detective Moreno’s voice sliced through the hysteria like cold steel. Mara heard his swift, measured strides approach the staircase. He didn't rush to Celeste or Evelyn. He knelt directly beside Mara, his experienced eyes scanning her position, her posture, and the subtle, protective curve of her arm over her abdomen.
"Mara," Moreno said, his tone softening just enough for only her to hear. "Can you open your eyes for me?"
Mara let out a slow, ragged breath, fluttering her eyelashes open to meet the detective’s steady gaze. "The phone," she whispered, her voice cracking with manufactured exhaustion. "It’s... it's still in my pocket."
Moreno’s hand slid discreetly down, retrieving the cracked smartphone from beneath the gray cardigan. The screen was still illuminated, displaying a completed call log to a direct recording archive. Moreno pocketed it without a word, his face tightening into an expression of grim satisfaction.
"Get an ambulance in here right now!" Moreno roared over his shoulder, standing up to face the gathering family. "And do not let anyone leave this estate. Everyone is a material witness to a potential crime."

Celeste staggered back, her face draining of all color as she pointed a manicured finger at Mara. "She’s lying! It was an accident! She’s trying to destroy this family!"
Mara slowly pushed herself up with Moreno’s steadying hand, her eyes locking onto Celeste’s terrified gaze. The game of polite family politics was over. The Hawthornes had finally met their match.
