Chapter 10 - ECHOES IN THE WINDThe autumn leaves of Silver Creek turned a brilliant shade of amber and gold, painting the quiet suburban streets in warm, nostalgic hues. Six months after the fall of Apex Logistics, life had finally settled into a peaceful, unbreakable rhythm.

Every morning, I woke up before sunrise, brewed two cups of coffee, and placed one on the kitchen counter beside Clara’s framed photograph. I still talked to her every day, telling her about Lily’s progress in school, the changing seasons, and how the local community center—funded entirely by the Clara Foundation—was finally opening its doors to help families in need.

Lily was thriving. The dark shadows of that terrible night were slowly fading, replaced by the bright, unbridled laughter of a six-year-old who knew she was loved, safe, and fiercely protected.

On a crisp Saturday afternoon, Lily and I walked down to the edge of the Silver Creek riverbank, carrying a small wooden basket filled with white lilies—Clara’s favorite flowers.

The water flowed gently past us, reflecting the brilliant blue sky above.

“Can I throw mine first, Daddy?” Lily asked, her eyes shining with youthful excitement as she held up a delicate white blossom.

“Of course, sweetheart,” I smiled, kneeling beside her. “Go ahead.”

Lily tossed her flower into the current. It landed softly on the shimmering surface, spinning slowly as it drifted downstream toward the horizon.

I took a deep breath, pulling Clara’s green silk scarf a little tighter around my neck, and gently tossed my own white lily into the water. It drifted right alongside Lily’s flower, staying close together as the current carried them toward the open river.

As a gentle autumn breeze swept through the trees above us, rustling the golden leaves overhead, a soft, familiar whisper seemed to ride the wind—light as a feather, warm as an embrace:

“Thank you, my love... Take care of our girl.”

I closed my eyes, letting a single tear of pure peace slip down my cheek, and smiled.

“Always,” I whispered back to the wind.

Hand in hand, Lily and I turned away from the riverbank and walked back home together, ready for whatever tomorrow would bring.
