Chapter 5 - THE SINKING SHIP

"What... what did you just say?" Gertrude’s voice sounded like paper tearing.
"Did you really think I sent $1,800 a month to a domestic account without watching where it went?" I took three steps toward her, my shadow towering over her frail form. "Saudi Arabia has some of the strictist banking laws in the world. Every single dollar I sent was routed through an international escrow account. I saw every transaction, Gertrude."
"You... you knew?" Prudence shrieked, backing away.
"I didn't know you were starving my family," I said, my voice dropping an octave, heavy with murder. "I thought you were just greedy. I thought you were using my money to buy fake friends and expensive dresses. I was going to come home and handle the finances like a good son. But when I saw my boy eating dirt..."
I leaned in, inches from Gertrude’s pale, trembling face. "...I realized I wasn't dealing with family. I was dealing with parasites."
"David, please!" Gertrude fell to her knees, grabbing the hem of my pants. "We're your blood! You can't send your own mother to federal prison! I gave you life!"
"And you almost took my son's," I snarled, kicking my foot free from her grasp. "You traded his life for country club memberships."
Outside, red and blue lights began to flash through the grand glass windows. The sound of sirens cut through the heavy rainstorm.
"They're here!" Prudence panicked, running toward the front door. "Mom, the police are here!"
"Yes," I said smoothly, stepping out onto the front porch as three police cruisers pulled into the circular driveway, tires screeching on the wet gravel.
Four officers jumped out with guns drawn, expecting a violent home invasion. Officer Martinez, the lead veteran cop in Bayside Heights, stepped forward with his flashlight aimed at me.
"Drop to your knees! Hands where I can see them!" Martinez yelled.
"Officer Martinez," I said calmly, holding my hands out in the open. "I am David Miller. The owner of this property. I am the one who called for federal intervention."
"We got a distress call from Gertrude Miller claiming an intruder—"
"The intruder is inside," I interrupted, pointing back into the warm, lit foyer where Gertrude and Prudence were trying to drag their heavy designer suitcases out the side door. "And she is currently attempting to flee state lines with stolen assets."
Behind Martinez, a sleek black SUV pulled up behind the police cruisers. Two men in crisp dark suits stepped out, holding silver briefcases and official badges.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation," the lead agent said, stepping past the local police. "Gertrude Miller? Prudence Miller?"
Gertrude froze on the porch steps, her suitcase slipping from her fingers and tumbling down the stairs, bursting open to reveal stacks of bundled hundred-dollar bills and stolen jewelry.
"Gertrude Miller," the FBI agent declared, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, offshore tax evasion, and human trafficking under the unlawful confinement of Sarah Miller."
"No! No! This is my house! David, tell them!" Gertrude screamed as the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists. She kicked and thriggled like a rabid animal. "David! Save me! I am your mother!"
I stood on the top step, pulling Sarah close to my side and wrapping my arm around her waist.
"I don't have a mother," I said quietly as the rain washed over us. "I only have a family to protect."
Prudence screamed as another agent pinned her against the hood of the police car, cuffing her wrists behind her back. "David! You monster! You ruined our lives!"
"You ruined your own lives the day you put a price on my son's head," I replied.
As the police cars drove away, their red lights fading into the foggy night, silence finally returned to the estate. But as I looked down at Sarah, I saw a look in her eyes that made my heart freeze.

It wasn't relief. It was sheer, unadulterated terror.
"David..." she whispered, looking toward the dark treeline at the edge of the estate. "They didn't act alone."
