Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW IN THE MIRROR

The aftermath was swift and absolute.

State troopers and federal agents descended upon the estate within twenty minutes. Mayor Richard Sterling was hauled away in handcuffs, facing charges of attempted murder, high-level municipal corruption, racketeering, and land fraud.

Gertrude and Prudence were formally charged as co-conspirators. The media caught everything. Front-page headlines across the country read: "HERO WORKER RETURNS HOME TO UNCOVER $12M LAND CONSPIRACY INVOLVING MAYOR AND OWN MOTHER."

Two weeks passed.

The estate was sold directly to the state for the full $12 million buyout, clearing all legal ties to Bayside Heights. With the money, Sarah, Jamie, and I moved across the country to a quiet, sunlit coastal town in California.

We bought a beautiful single-story home overlooking the ocean. No grand staircases. No hidden service quarters. Just open space, fresh air, and love. Jamie was enrolled in a private school, his health restored, his smile finally returning. Sarah had gained back her weight, her radiance returning brighter than the day I first met her.

It was a sunny Tuesday morning. Jamie was at school, and Sarah was out shopping for groceries—using her own unlimited bank account.

I sat on the back patio, drinking black coffee, watching the waves crash against the rocks.

My satellite phone rang.

It was an unlisted, encrypted number.

I answered. "Hello?"

"David," a smooth, calm male voice spoke on the other end. It was Arthur—my legal manager from the Dubai financial firm.

"Arthur," I said, taking a sip of coffee. "Everything is settled here. The transfers went through. Why are you calling on this line?"

There was a long pause on the phone. The sound of rustling paper echoed across the line.

"David... we finished the final deep-level forensic audit of your mother’s accounts," Arthur said, his tone unusually grave. "The files we seized from Mayor Sterling's private safe."

"What about them? Sterling is going to prison for thirty years. My mother is facing fifteen. It's done."

"David... Sterling didn't initiate the plan five years ago," Arthur said slowly.

I froze. The cup of coffee stopped halfway to my mouth.

"What are you talking about?"

"The original wire transfers... the setup to get you sent to Saudi Arabia... the initial contact with Mayor Sterling to set up the land buyout scheme," Arthur explained, his voice chilling my blood. "It wasn't Sterling. It wasn't your mother, Gertrude."

"Then who was it?" I demanded, standing up, my pulse spiking.

"The offshore holding company that authorized your contract, the one that transferred the land rights behind your back five years ago... it was registered under a single owner," Arthur said. "The signature on the original setup document was signed six years ago. Before you even left for Saudi Arabia."

"WHO SIGNED IT, ARTHUR?" I roared.

Arthur took a deep breath.

"Sarah."
