CHAPTER 1 — THE SCREAM THAT SHATTERED AN ENTIRE FAMILY

Emilia was only two years old.

She still mispronounced butterflies as "fly-byes."

She still reached for her mother's hand every time a stranger smiled at her.

She still believed every adult was kind.

That belief lasted exactly three seconds.

Because all it took was one tiny hand reaching toward a little red toy truck...

...for one woman to destroy an entire family forever.

The backyard of the Ortega family estate in Cuernavaca looked like something from a magazine.

A long wooden table overflowed with grilled cecina, handmade tortillas wrapped in embroidered cloth, roasted corn, bowls of fresh guacamole, colorful salsa, and crystal pitchers of hibiscus tea.

Children laughed while chasing bubbles across the lawn.

The adults drank coffee beneath white umbrellas.

Music drifted softly from an old speaker.

To every neighbor watching from outside the stone walls...

they looked like the perfect family.

Valeria knew better.

Every invitation from Mateo's family felt less like a celebration...

and more like entering enemy territory.

She had begged her husband not to work that Saturday.

"Please come with us."

Mateo kissed her forehead while adjusting his tie.

"I'll only be at the office for a couple of hours. I'll meet you there before lunch."

"You know how Brenda is."

He sighed.

"My sister talks too much, but she'd never actually hurt anyone."

Valeria forced a smile.

She wanted to believe him.

She really did.

The moment she stepped through the front gate carrying Emilia on her hip...

Brenda's eyes immediately locked onto them.

Not a smile.

Not a greeting.

Just calculation.

"There they are."

She looked directly at her son.

"Gael."

The four-year-old stopped playing.

"What, Mommy?"

"Remember."

She pointed toward Emilia.

"Don't let her touch your toys."

Gael nodded obediently.

He had heard those words hundreds of times.

Ofelia, Mateo's mother, walked over carrying a tray of coffee.

"My beautiful grandson!"

She kissed Gael twice.

Then glanced at Emilia.

"Oh..."

Her smile disappeared.

"You've gotten so big."

No hug.

No kiss.

Nothing.

Valeria had become used to that difference years ago.

Whenever the family gathered...

Gael received gifts.

Emilia received silence.

Six years earlier...

when Valeria first married Mateo...

Brenda had hugged her tightly.

"I've always wanted a sister."

Three weeks later...

she began telling everyone Valeria had married Mateo because he earned more than his brothers.

When Valeria bought her own bakery...

Brenda claimed Mateo secretly paid for it.

When Valeria's business became successful...

Brenda started calling her arrogant.

Jealousy slowly became hatred.

Hatred eventually became obsession.

Everything Emilia did somehow became a threat to Gael.

If Emilia learned to count...

Brenda enrolled Gael in advanced math lessons.

If Emilia received a birthday bicycle...

Gael somehow got two.

If Emilia hugged Grandpa...

Brenda immediately interrupted so Gael would be the center of attention again.

The adults laughed.

"Kids will be kids."

But Valeria noticed something terrifying.

It wasn't the children competing.

It was Brenda.

Ramiro, the family patriarch, ruled every gathering with quiet intimidation.

Nobody interrupted him.

Nobody questioned him.

Nobody argued.

Whenever someone disagreed...

his favorite sentence ended every conversation.

"This family obeys me."

Even Mateo still struggled to challenge his father.

Iván...

the youngest brother...

rarely spoke at all.

He mostly stayed behind his camera, quietly photographing family moments that nobody else seemed interested in preserving.

He was the invisible one.

And invisible people often noticed everything.

Lunch stretched into the afternoon.

The adults relaxed with coffee.

The children ran barefoot across the grass.

Emilia wandered slowly through the garden.

She wasn't loud.

She wasn't grabbing toys.

She wasn't throwing tantrums.

She simply loved looking at colorful things.

Butterflies.

Flowers.

Ladybugs.

Anything small fascinated her.

She stopped beside a flowerpot.

There...

half-hidden beneath lavender leaves...

sat a tiny red fire truck.

Gael had abandoned it minutes earlier while chasing a soccer ball.

Emilia crouched carefully.

She smiled.

With one tiny finger...

she gently spun one black wheel.

Nothing else.

No grabbing.

No running.

No breaking.

Just curiosity.

Valeria saw her immediately.

She smiled softly.

"Sweetheart..."

She began walking toward her.

"Let's leave your cousin's toy where it is."

Emilia nodded.

Her tiny fingers released the truck instantly.

She had already obeyed.

It should have ended there.

Instead...

someone exploded.

Brenda shoved her chair backward so violently it crashed onto the patio stones.

"I WARNED YOU!"

Every conversation stopped.

Valeria looked up.

"She's already putting it back."

"I SAID DON'T TOUCH MY SON'S THINGS!"

"Brenda..."

"She's only two."

"Exactly."

Brenda's eyes narrowed.

"She's old enough to learn."

The words froze the entire yard.

Even Gael looked confused.

Nobody moved.

Nobody imagined what came next.

Ofelia had just poured fresh coffee into a porcelain mug.

Steam curled into the afternoon air.

Brenda reached for it.

Her movements were slow.

Controlled.

Deliberate.

She wrapped every finger around the handle.

Lifted the cup.

Turned toward Emilia.

For one horrifying second...

Valeria believed Brenda was simply walking closer.

Then she noticed something.

Brenda wasn't looking at the cup.

She was looking directly into Emilia's eyes.

As if making sure the little girl understood exactly who was about to hurt her.

"And maybe..."

Brenda said coldly...

"...this will teach you."

She swung her arm forward.

The boiling coffee exploded across Emilia's face.

The scream that followed didn't sound human.

It was the sound of unbearable pain...

coming from a child too young to understand cruelty.

Emilia collapsed into the grass, clawing desperately at her burning skin.

Her tiny yellow dress instantly darkened with steaming liquid.

Valeria threw herself to the ground.

"EMILIA!"

She ripped off her own sweater, desperately trying to wipe away the coffee without tearing the burned skin beneath.

"My baby!"

"My baby!"

"Someone call an ambulance!"

"Water!"

"PLEASE!"

Not one person moved.

Not one.

Instead...

Ofelia stood up...

looked at the crying child...

and frowned.

"Take her away."

Valeria stared at her in disbelief.

"What?"

"She's frightening Gael."

The words echoed across the yard like poison.

Valeria looked toward Ramiro.

Surely...

surely a grandfather would protect his granddaughter.

Instead...

he calmly pointed toward the gate.

"You heard my wife."

"Leave."

"We're not ruining this family gathering over one accident."

Accident?

Valeria's entire body shook.

"She threw coffee at my daughter!"

Ramiro's expression never changed.

"Careful what you accuse people of."

Brenda still stood there.

Holding the empty mug.

Breathing heavily.

Not a single apology escaped her lips.

Not one.

Valeria carried Emilia to the car.

The little girl's cries became weaker with every passing minute.

That terrified her more than the screaming.

By the time she reached the hospital...

Emilia could barely speak.

Doctors rushed them into the burn unit.

Nurses carefully cut away the melted yellow dress.

One nurse quietly slipped the dress into a sealed evidence bag.

Valeria noticed.

"Why are you keeping it?"

The senior burn specialist looked at her gravely.

"Because these injuries don't match an accidental spill."

He gently examined the splash pattern across Emilia's face, neck, and chest.

His expression darkened.

"The liquid came from above..."

"...with significant force."

He looked directly into Valeria's eyes.

"Someone intentionally threw this."

Those words changed everything.

Because now...

this wasn't just a family dispute.

It was felony child abuse.

Almost an hour later...

Mateo finally called.

Valeria answered immediately.

Before she could speak...

he sighed.

"My mother already explained."

Valeria froze.

"Excuse me?"

"She said Emilia grabbed the coffee from the table."

Valeria couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"They're saying you overreacted..."

"...and accused Brenda because you panicked."

Silence.

Then Valeria whispered...

"Look at your daughter before you decide who you believe."

She hung up.

Seconds later...

her phone vibrated again.

Unknown attachment.

Sent by Iván.

Mateo's younger brother.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

The first image showed the shattered porcelain mug.

The second showed the abandoned toy truck beside the flowerpot.

The third...

made her heart stop.

Ramiro stood in the middle of the yard.

Pointing toward the gate.

Every family member surrounded him.

As if receiving instructions.

Below the photos...

Iván had written only one sentence.

"Brenda threw the coffee on purpose. Dad ordered everyone to tell the police Emilia grabbed the cup herself."

Valeria felt ice spread through her veins.

Then another notification arrived.

This time...

a video.

No message.

No explanation.

Only a twelve-second security camera clip...

from somewhere outside the property.

She pressed play.

The image froze halfway through...

just before the coffee left Brenda's hand.

The file was corrupted.

But one thing was clear.

Someone else...

had been recording everything.

And whoever owned that camera...

May you like

was about to destroy every lie the Ortega family had just created.
