CHAPTER 2 — THE NEIGHBOR WHO SAW EVERYTHING

Valeria stared at the corrupted video until the screen went black.
Again.
And again.
Every time it stopped at the exact same frame.
Brenda's arm was raised.
The steaming mug was inches from Emilia's face.
Then the file froze.
Whoever had sent it hadn't included a name.
Only the message:
"Don't trust anyone in the Ortega family. Someone next door has the full recording."
Valeria's heart pounded.
Someone had witnessed everything.
Someone outside the family.
For the first time since arriving at the hospital, she felt a tiny spark of hope.
Inside the burn unit, Emilia had finally fallen asleep.
Tiny white bandages covered her left cheek, neck, and shoulder.
An IV dripped quietly beside her bed.
Every few minutes she whimpered in her sleep.
Valeria gently stroked her daughter's hair.
"I'm here, baby."
"I promise..."
"No one will ever hurt you again."
The promise felt impossible.
Because the people who had hurt Emilia shared the same last name as her father.
The burn specialist returned carrying several photographs.
"I'm Dr. Alejandro Ruiz."
"I've reviewed your daughter's injuries."
He placed the photos on the table.
"The burns are first and second degree."
Valeria swallowed hard.
"Will she recover?"
"Physically..."
"Most likely."
"But facial burns in children require careful treatment."
"There may be scarring."
The word shattered her.
Scarring.
For touching a toy.
Dr. Ruiz continued.
"I also need to tell you something important."
"The splash pattern is very specific."
He pointed to the photos.
"If hot coffee spills accidentally, gravity creates downward streaks."
He tapped another image.
"Your daughter's injuries travel horizontally."
"That means the liquid was projected."
"In my professional opinion..."
"...someone intentionally threw it."
He paused.
"I've already documented that in the medical report."
Valeria looked at him.
"Will you testify?"
"If necessary."
"Yes."
Her phone rang.
Mateo.
She hesitated before answering.
"How is she?"
Valeria almost laughed.
Now he was asking?
"Come see for yourself."
"I can't."
"Dad says everyone is too emotional right now."
Valeria's voice turned cold.
"So you're staying with them."
"I'm trying to calm everyone down."
"Everyone?"
"Our daughter is lying in a hospital bed."
Mateo remained silent.
Finally he whispered,
"My mom swears Emilia grabbed the cup."
Valeria closed her eyes.
"You still don't know your own family."
Then she ended the call.
Across town...
the Ortega family had already begun preparing their version of the story.
Ramiro stood at the head of the dining table.
Nobody was eating.
"Listen carefully."
"If the police ask..."
"It was an accident."
Brenda nodded immediately.
"She grabbed the mug."
Ofelia added,
"Valeria wasn't watching her."
Gael quietly played with another toy on the floor.
He looked up.
"But Mommy threw—"
"GAEL!"
Brenda's voice cracked like a whip.
The little boy flinched.
"I said..."
"It was an accident."
His tiny eyes filled with tears.
"Okay..."
Ramiro leaned forward.
"If anyone changes their story..."
"You're no longer part of this family."
No one argued.
Not even Mateo.
Only one chair remained empty.
Iván's.
His phone buzzed.
A reply from Valeria.
Thank you.
He stared at the message for several seconds.
His hands trembled.
He had lived under Ramiro's control his entire life.
His father decided where he studied.
Who he dated.
Which job he accepted.
Every decision required permission.
For years...
Iván had convinced himself staying quiet kept the peace.
Tonight...
he realized silence had almost destroyed a little girl.
He quietly opened his laptop.
Hundreds of photographs appeared.
Birthdays.
Christmas dinners.
Family reunions.
Hidden among them...
were dozens of candid pictures.
Brenda screaming.
Ramiro threatening relatives.
Ofelia slapping a waitress years earlier.
He had never intended to use them.
Until now.
Meanwhile...
Detective Lucía Herrera from the Child Abuse Unit arrived at the hospital.
She introduced herself gently.
"I'm here because the hospital filed a mandatory report."
Valeria nodded.
"I'll tell you everything."
For nearly an hour...
she described every insult...
every family gathering...
every moment Brenda targeted Emilia.
When she finished...
Lucía asked one question.
"Did anyone witness the assault?"
Valeria thought of Iván.
"He did."
"But his father is forcing everyone to lie."
The detective wrote something down.
"Families often close ranks."
"But evidence doesn't."
She handed Valeria her card.
"If anyone contacts you..."
"Call me immediately."
Late that evening...
Valeria stepped outside for fresh air.
The hospital parking lot was almost empty.
A silver pickup slowly pulled into a dark corner.
The headlights switched off.
Someone stepped out wearing a baseball cap.
He looked around nervously before walking toward her.
It was Iván.
"You shouldn't be here," Valeria whispered.
"If my dad finds out—"
"I don't care anymore."
He handed her a small black USB drive.
"What's this?"
"I copied everything before deleting it from my phone."
Valeria frowned.
"Everything?"
"I photographed the backyard after you left."
"I recorded Dad telling everyone to lie."
Her eyes widened.
"You have audio?"
Iván nodded.
"And..."
He hesitated.
"I found something else."
"What?"
"Our neighbor."
"The one behind the stone wall."
"He has four security cameras."
"He called me an hour ago."
Valeria stopped breathing.
"What did he say?"
"He said..."
"...one of his cameras points directly into our backyard."
For a long moment...
neither of them spoke.
Then Iván smiled for the first time in years.
"The entire attack was recorded."
Valeria's knees nearly gave out.
"Does he still have it?"
Iván nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"But Dad already went to his house tonight."
Valeria felt her stomach drop.
"Why?"
Iván looked her straight in the eyes.
"To buy the footage before anyone else could see it."
At that exact moment...
inside the neighbor's house...
an elderly man named Don Ernesto sat in front of four security monitors.
Across from him...
Ramiro placed a thick envelope stuffed with cash onto the table.
"Name your price."
Ernesto didn't touch the money.
Ramiro smiled coldly.
"Everyone has a price."
The old man calmly reached for his computer mouse.
"You should leave."
Ramiro's smile disappeared.
"You don't understand."
"If that video reaches the police..."
"It'll destroy my family."
Ernesto clicked one button.
The security footage began playing on the monitor.
The room fell silent.
Brenda clearly lifted the mug.
Aimed.
Paused.
Then deliberately threw the boiling coffee into Emilia's face.
There was no accident.
No confusion.
No child pulling a cup.
Only a deliberate attack.
Ernesto stopped the video.
Then looked directly at Ramiro.
"You came to buy the wrong copy."
Ramiro frowned.
"What?"
The old man smiled.
"I've already uploaded the original to three different places."
"And tomorrow morning..."
May you like
"...the police will receive one of them."
