CHAPTER 2: The Paradise Illusion

Three thousand miles away, in a luxury cliffside villa overlooking the Sea of Cortez, Derek Miller was living a lie.
He sat on a plush outdoor lounge chair, holding a crystal glass of premium tequila. The sun was setting, painting the Mexican sky in brilliant shades of pink and orange. Next to him, Madison was posing for a selfie, her pouty lips glistening with lip gloss.
"Hold on, babe," Madison giggled, adjusting her oversized sunglasses. "Let me get the sunset in the background. Everyone at the office needs to see how incredible this trip is."
"Make sure you don't tag the company account," Derek said, a slight edge of anxiety clipping his words.
"Oh, relax, Daddy," she cooed, rubbing his shoulder. "You’re the regional director. Who cares? You earned this. You’ve been working so hard dealing with... well, you know. Her."
Derek swallowed his tequila, the alcohol burning a path down his throat. For a brief second, a fleeting image of Sienna flashed through his mind—her face pale, holding her stomach, standing over the screaming baby.
He pushed the image away instantly, replacing it with irritation. Sienna brought it on herself, he reasoned. She became boring. Obsessed with the baby. She didn't look after me anymore.
His phone buzzed on the glass table.
It was a text from his mother.
Brenda: DEREK. CALL ME IMMEDIATELY. THAT PSYCHO HATHAWAY HAS SOLD THE HOUSE. THE MOVERS ARE HERE. EVERYTHING IS GONE.
Derek frowned, staring at the screen. He laughed nervously. "This is a joke."
"What’s a joke, babe?" Madison asked, leaning over his shoulder.
He tried to reply to the text, but a massive red exclamation point popped up next to his message.
Message Failed to Send.
He checked his signal. It was full. He tried calling his mother. A robotic voice answered immediately: "We're sorry, the number you are calling has restricted incoming calls from this line, or your account services have been suspended."
Derek’s brow furrowed. He quickly opened his mobile banking app to check his corporate credit card account.
ERROR: ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT TERMINATED.
A cold sweat broke out across the back of his neck, completely ignoring the warm tropical breeze. He switched to his personal checking account—the joint account he shared with Sienna.
BALANCE: $0.00.
"What the hell?" Derek stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the stone patio.
"Derek? What's wrong? You’re ruining the vibe," Madison complained, looking up from her phone.
"My cards are declined. My account is wiped," Derek muttered, his fingers flying across the screen. He tried to log into his corporate email.

The tequila in his stomach turned to pure ice. The illusion of his perfect, untouchable paradise was shattering in real-time, pixel by pixel.
The Collapse of a Kingdom
He spent the next three hours in a state of escalating panic. He couldn't call out; his phone line had been disconnected by the primary account holder—Sienna. The villa’s Wi-Fi was his only connection to the world, but every corporate portal he tried to access was locked tight.
At 10:00 p.m., an email dropped into his personal Gmail account. It was from the corporate legal counsel of his employer, Apex Global Logistics.
Subject: Notice of Immediate Termination and Pending Legal Action
Mr. Miller,
Effective immediately, your employment with Apex Global Logistics is terminated for cause. A comprehensive forensic financial audit conducted by an independent third party has revealed extensive evidence of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent invoicing, and misappropriation of corporate funds through a shell entity known as Vance Consulting Group.
The evidence has been turned over to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the federal authorities. Do not attempt to contact any employees of Apex Global Logistics. All inquiries must be directed to our legal council.
Derek’s phone slipped from his hand, bouncing onto the outdoor rug.
"No," he whispered. "No, no, no. How did they find out? It was airtight!"
Madison looked at him, her eyes wide with sudden fear. "Derek? What do you mean, Vance Consulting? Did they find out about the invoices? You said it was safe! You said that money was our little secret!"
Derek turned on her, his face twisted in a snarl. "Shut up, Madison! Just shut up!"
He grabbed his laptop, his hands shaking violently as he tried to access the Vance Consulting offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands. This was his safety net—the $150,000 he had held back for emergencies.
He typed in the encryption key. The page loaded.
