Chapter 7 - THE TRAP CLOSESThe heavy steel blast doors bowed inward under the tremendous force of an external thermal charge. Sparks showered across the concrete floor like a Fourth of July fireworks display, searing the air with the smell of burning metal.

"They're cutting through the hinges!" Marco yelled, pressing his back against the server rack and aiming his pistol at the smoking seam of the door. "Boss, we're trapped like rats!"

Arthur didn't flinch. He stood calmly beside the master console, watching the progress bar on the main monitor tick steadily upward as the data wipe routine executed its final sequence.

Erase Progress: 84%... 86%... 88%...

"You insane old man," I snarled, grabbing Arthur by the lapels of his tailored cashmere coat and slamming him hard against the cold server rack. "You're killing us all! You're killing your own grandchild!"

Arthur didn't resist. He just looked at me with a sickening, paternal pity.

"A bloodline is only valuable if it serves the dynasty, Lucas," Arthur rasped, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth where I had shoved him. "If the empire falls, nothing else matters. Not you. Not Elena. Not the unborn child."

I raised my fist, ready to shatter his jaw, but a sharp, piercing sound cut through the roar of the thermal cutters outside.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

The monitor above the console didn't show 100%. Instead, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding blue, replacing the purge progress bar with an encrypted video feed.

A live security stream from St. Catherine’s Medical Center, Room 347.

We all froze.

On the high-definition screen, Elena Ross was no longer unconscious. She was sitting upright in the hospital bed, her face pale but her eyes blazing with an ice-cold fury that I had never seen in her before.

Standing beside her bed was not a nurse, and not a hitman.

It was a man I recognized instantly from federal intelligence briefings—Viktor Vorona, the head of the Russian syndicate, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at the heart of the woman I loved.

“Can you hear me, Arthur?” Viktor’s voice boomed through the high-end audio speakers of the Mercer vault, rich with a heavy, menacing Russian accent.

Arthur’s face drained of all color. The untouchable patriarch actually staggered back against the server rack, his eyes widening in pure horror.

“You thought you could hide behind your fancy servers and your corporate mercenaries,” Viktor purred smoothly through the speakers, gently resting the barrel of his pistol against Elena’s temple. “You thought you could steal my money and slaughter my men without consequence. But you forgot one crucial detail, Arthur... the girl you tried to kill tonight isn't just an innocent bystander. She is my eldest daughter.”

The vault went dead silent. The thermal cutters outside stopped whining.

I turned slowly, my gaze snapping from the screen to Avery, who stood quietly by the console with her head bowed.

"You didn't just want revenge for your father," I whispered, the horrifying realization crashing over me like a tidal wave. "Elena isn't an innocent victim caught in the crossfire. She’s the crown princess of the syndicate."

Avery looked up, her eyes cold as winter ice.

"She was sent to destroy you, Lucas," Avery said softly. "But then she really did fall in love with you. And your father tried to murder her anyway."

On the screen, Elena looked straight into the camera lens—straight into my eyes across the city.

"I'm sorry, Luke," her voice echoed through the vault, calm, heartbroken, and utterly lethal. "I tried to keep you safe from my world. But your family wouldn't let us live."

She reached down, took Viktor’s hand away from her temple, and pressed the barrel of the pistol directly against her own stomach—right over our unborn child.
