Chapter 10 - The New Empire and the Unexpected TwistThree years later.

The sun was setting over a sprawling, sun-drenched coastal estate just outside Carmel-by-the-Sea. The sound of crashing ocean waves echoed softly against the cliffs, mingling with the joyful laughter of a toddler running across the manicured green lawn.

"Leo! Stop running with that wooden sword, or you'll trip over the hydrangeas!"

I laughed, sitting on the veranda patio with a cup of herbal tea, watching our three-year-old son chase a golden retriever across the grass. He had Damian’s piercing dark eyes and unruly hair, but stubborn spirit that was entirely his own.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and warm lips pressed softly against the crook of my neck.

"Let him run," Damian murmured, his voice rich with amusement. "A future Moretti heir needs to learn how to navigate rough terrain early."

I leaned back against his chest, smiling as I placed my hand over his. "He's three years old, Damian. He doesn't need to navigate a syndicate; he needs to learn how to share his crayons."

Life had changed drastically. Damian had officially stepped down as the active head of the Moretti syndicate, handing the operational control over to a trusted council while dismantling the violent blood-feuds that had once defined his empire. We lived here permanently now—away from the concrete towers of San Francisco, away from assassins, and away from betrayal.

The estate was heavily guarded, of course. Some habits of a mafia king never truly die. But here, the guards wore casual polo shirts instead of tactical suits, blending into the background of our peaceful family life.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Damian asked softly, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him. He looked relaxed, free of the haunted, paranoid shadow that used to hang over him.

"I was just thinking about the day we met in that boutique," I smiled, tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "If someone had told me back then that I’d be standing here on a sunny afternoon, married to the most feared man on the West Coast, raising a family... I would have called them insane."

"You did call me insane," Damian chuckled, kissing my forehead. "Multiple times. Usually right before throwing heavy objects at my head."

"Fair point."

We stood in comfortable silence for a moment, watching our son chase the dog toward the cliffside garden.

Suddenly, a sleek black sedan pulled up the private coastal driveway, kicking up a light cloud of dust.

Damian’s body language instantly shifted. The relaxed father vanished for a fraction of a second, replaced by the lethal mafia king. He stepped slightly in front of me, his hand resting near his jacket.

The car door opened, and a tall man in a crisp gray suit stepped out, holding a thick, red-leather dossier under his arm. It was Marcus Vance’s former second-in-command, now working as our head of internal security.

He walked up the stone steps, looking slightly tense.

"Boss," the man nodded respectfully to Damian, before looking at me. "Mrs. Moretti. Apologies for interrupting your evening. But we received an encrypted transmission from overseas five minutes ago."

Damian’s eyes narrowed. "From where?"

"From an undocumented offshore holding facility in the Swiss Alps," the security chief replied grimly, opening the dossier. "The facility we used to lock away Eleanor Moretti after the tribunal three years ago."

My heart skipped a beat. "What happened? Did she escape?"

The security chief shook his head slowly. "No, Mrs. Moretti. She didn't escape. The facility warden reports that Eleanor Moretti passed away in her sleep early this morning. But before she died... she left a final, handwritten instruction meant specifically for you, Damian."

He handed a sealed, wax-stamped envelope to Damian.

Damian stared down at the envelope bearing his mother’s sharp, familiar handwriting. The sun dipped below the ocean horizon, casting long, dramatic shadows across the veranda.

With steady fingers, Damian broke the wax seal, pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment, and read the final words of the woman who had tried to destroy our lives.

As his eyes scanned the page, his face went completely pale. A dark, chilling shadow crossed his features—one I hadn't seen in years.

"Damian?" I whispered, a sudden wave of cold dread washing over me. "What does it say?"

Damian slowly lowered the letter, looking up at me with eyes wide with absolute, unimaginable shock.

"She didn't work alone, Bella," Damian whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "The syndicate opposition... it wasn't just Mother. The person funding the entire operation... is still out there. And according to this document..."

He swallowed hard, looking toward the driveway where our son was still laughing and playing in the golden evening light.

"...they share our last name."
