Chapter 6 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONBroken ArmorThe rain drummed a relentless, rhythmic beat against the tall bay windows of the safehouse library. The only illumination came from the amber glow of a floor lamp casting long, dramatic shadows across the Persian rug.

Claire sat at the mahogany desk, laying out the charred remnants of her grandmother's logbook, carefully piecing together fragments of burnt paper with tweezers and transparent archival tape.
Adrian walked in, having shed his bloodstained jacket. In a rare display of vulnerability, he unbuttoned his cuffs and rolled his sleeves up, revealing forearms corded with muscle and faint scars from old knife wounds. He poured two glasses of amber scotch and set one down beside Claire’s elbow.
"You should sleep," he said quietly.
"I can't close my eyes without seeing that operating room," Claire whispered, her voice tight. She looked up at him, the dim light catching the raw emotion in her gray eyes. "Why did my grandmother keep this secret for twenty-five years? Why didn't she run?"
Adrian sat down in the leather armchair across from her, resting his elbows on his knees. "Because of you, Claire. When you were born, your parents died in a 'car accident' three days after Margaret tried to leak the initial hospital reports. She went into hiding to keep you safe. She gave you away to a quiet family in the suburbs, changed your last name, and spent the rest of her life watching you from a distance."
Claire’s breath hitched. "She... she watched me grow up?"
"Every milestone," Adrian nodded softly. "She visited your school dances from across the street. She paid your college tuition through an anonymous trust fund. She protected you until her heart finally gave out last month."

A single tear slipped down Claire’s cheek, catching the amber light. Without thinking, Adrian reached across the desk, his thumb gently brushing the moisture from her skin. His touch was shockingly tender for a man feared by killers and cartels alike.
"She left you in my path," Adrian whispered, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made the air between them crackle with unspoken electricity. "Or maybe... the universe finally decided to balance the scales."
