Chapter 5 – The Bullet Was Never Meant for Clara

The gunshot echoed through the shattered lobby.

Time stopped.

Employees screamed.

Glass continued raining from the ceiling.

Ethan's first instinct wasn't to think.

It was to move.

He threw himself in front of Clara.

BANG!

The bullet struck the marble pillar inches from Ethan's head, spraying stone fragments across the floor.

Another shot followed.

Security Guard Robert tackled the masked gunman before he could fire again.

The weapon slid across the polished floor.

Chaos erupted.

Police officers rushed through the broken entrance, weapons drawn.

"Drop your guns!"

"Police!"

Two masked men escaped through the revolving doors.

One disappeared into a waiting black SUV.

Another vanished into a nearby construction site.

But one attacker wasn't fast enough.

Robert held him against the floor until officers handcuffed him.

The man never spoke.

He only smiled.

Clara couldn't breathe.

Her knees gave way.

Ethan caught her before she hit the ground.

"You're safe."

"No..."

She whispered.

"They weren't trying to scare me."

"They came to finish something."

Meanwhile...

Twenty floors above them...

Someone quietly watched the entire attack through security cameras.

He wore a dark suit.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Richard Vance.

He picked up a secure phone.

"They failed."

A voice answered from the other end.

"Should we activate Phase Two?"

Richard stared silently at the lobby monitor where Ethan held Clara protectively.

After several seconds...

He replied,

"Not yet."

Then he hung up.

For the first time in years...

Richard looked genuinely worried.

Outside, dozens of reporters had already surrounded the building.

Breaking news banners flashed across every major network.

BILLIONAIRE'S CLEANER TARGETED IN ARMED ATTACK.

MYSTERY WOMAN LINKED TO CEO'S LATE WIFE.

POLICE INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE CONSPIRACY.

The story had exploded far beyond a strange marriage promise.

Now it involved murder...

Kidnapping...

And attempted assassination.

Detective Samuel Hayes watched paramedics examine Clara.

"This wasn't random."

Ethan nodded.

"I know."

Hayes lowered his voice.

"The man we arrested..."

"He has no fingerprints."

"What?"

"They've been chemically burned away."

Ethan frowned.

"Professional?"

Hayes looked toward the ambulance.

"Military level."

Lily suddenly ran through the crowd before anyone could stop her.

"Clara!"

Ethan turned.

"Lily, stay back!"

But it was too late.

The little girl wrapped her tiny arms around Clara.

For a moment...

Everything else disappeared.

Sirens.

Helicopters.

Reporters.

Police tape.

None of it mattered.

Lily looked into Clara's eyes.

"They're still following you."

Every adult froze.

Clara slowly blinked.

"What did you say?"

"The bad men."

"They're still following you."

"Just like before."

Ethan stared at his daughter.

"What bad men?"

Lily looked confused.

"The ones Mommy argued with."

Silence.

A silence so heavy even the detectives stopped writing.

"Lily..."

Ethan knelt beside her.

"What men?"

The little girl frowned as though she couldn't understand why nobody remembered.

"When Mommy took me to the lake."

"There were two men."

"They wore black suits."

"They kept asking her..."

Lily squeezed her eyes shut, trying to remember.

"They kept asking where..."

She stopped.

"Where what?"

"The little girl was."

Every muscle in Clara's body froze.

"I wasn't supposed to remember."

Clara whispered those words without realizing she had spoken aloud.

Images flooded back.

A rainy highway.

Sarah driving.

A frightened child asleep in the back seat.

A blue stuffed rabbit.

Someone following them.

Headlights growing closer.

Sarah looking into the rearview mirror.

Then saying...

"If anything happens to me..."

"...promise you'll protect her."

The memory ended with a violent crash.

Clara screamed.

She collapsed unconscious.

Paramedics rushed forward.

Ethan refused to let go of her hand.

"What happened?"

One medic looked at him.

"Extreme memory recovery can shock the brain."

"She needs a hospital."

Immediately.

Later that night...

Mount Grace Medical Center placed Clara under police protection.

Two officers guarded her room.

Hallway cameras monitored every entrance.

No visitors without authorization.

Detective Hayes believed she was finally safe.

He was wrong.

At 2:17 a.m...

The lights on the entire hospital floor suddenly went dark.

Emergency generators should have activated immediately.

They didn't.

Every security monitor turned black.

Every electronic lock released.

Someone had shut down the entire system from inside the hospital.

A nurse quietly pushed a medication cart toward Clara's room.

She wore the correct uniform.

The correct ID badge.

The correct smile.

The officers outside barely looked up.

"Late medication," she said calmly.

One officer checked the chart.

Everything appeared normal.

"You've got five minutes."

She entered.

Closed the door.

Locked it.

The smile vanished.

From beneath the medication tray...

She pulled out a syringe filled with a clear liquid.

Not medicine.

Poison.

She approached Clara's bed.

Sleeping peacefully beneath a thin white blanket.

The fake nurse whispered,

"I'm sorry."

"They'll kill my son if I don't."

She raised the syringe.

Just inches from Clara's neck...

A small voice broke the silence.

"Don't."

The woman spun around.

Standing in the doorway...

Still wearing pink pajamas and clutching her stuffed bear...

Was Lily.

No one knew how she had slipped past hospital security.

She simply stood there.

Looking directly at the fake nurse.

Then she quietly said seven words that made the woman's hands begin to shake.

"My mommy knew your real name, Susan."

The syringe slipped from the nurse's fingers.

It shattered against the floor.

The woman turned completely pale.

She whispered in horror,

"How could... she possibly know that?"

Behind Lily...

Ethan slowly stepped into the room.

He wasn't looking at the nurse.

He was looking at his daughter.

Because Lily had just spoken the name of a woman...

May you like

...that had never appeared in any police report.

End of Chapter 5.
