Chapter 9 - THE CHICAGO CONNECTIONThe atmosphere in the executive boardroom of Cole Hospitality had shifted from celebratory to intensely strategic. The digital screens lining the wall displayed complex financial flowcharts, wire transfer records, and corporate registry documents dating back nearly a decade.

Ethan stood at the head of the conference table, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, studying a highlighted transaction trail that spanned three different states.
“So Gary wasn’t just a rogue manager skimming tips,” Daniel Price said, adjusting his glasses as he pointed a laser pointer at a shell company registered in Delaware. “He was a foot soldier in a much larger laundering scheme orchestrated by the Heritage Table Group’s previous executive board—specifically, Arthur Vance.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. Arthur Vance was a legendary figure in the southern restaurant industry, known for building upscale dining empires before retiring wealthy in Chicago three years ago. He was also the man who had personally recommended Gary Mercer for the Bellweather House management position.
“Vance didn't sell us the restaurant group because he was retiring,” Ethan realized aloud, the pieces finally clicking into place. “He sold it to us because the federal auditors were closing in on his asset inflation scheme, and he needed to dump the sinking ship onto a larger balance sheet before the books imploded.”
Mara crossed her arms, her expression grim. “If the SEC finds out we absorbed a fraudulent entity without declaring it within the thirty-day window, our upcoming national expansion could be frozen indefinitely. We need to move fast.”
Ethan walked over to the window, looking out over the glittering skyline of Nashville. The sun was beginning to set, casting long, dramatic shadows across the cityscape. He thought of Caleb waiting at home, of Tessa and Luis at the Bellweather House, and of the thousands of employees whose livelihoods depended on Cole Hospitality remaining strong and clean.
“We don't wait for the SEC to find it,” Ethan said quietly, turning back to face his team. “We hand them the entire file on a silver platter tomorrow morning.”
“And Arthur Vance?” Daniel asked.

Ethan’s jaw tightened, a cold, unyielding resolve hardening his features.
“Book a private flight to Chicago for tonight. We’re going to pay Mr. Vance a little visit. And unlike Gary, we won't be using an undercover disguise.”
