Chapter 4 - Ambush at DawnSleep didn't come that night. I sat on the living room sofa, wrapped in a blanket, watching the front door while Liam and Chloe slept peacefully in my room. The pain medication from the hospital was wearing off, replaced by a dull, throbbing ache that reminded me of my physical vulnerability. But emotionally, I was completely numb.

At 6:00 AM, as the sun began to paint the Houston sky in shades of bruised purple and orange, a sharp tap sounded at my window.

I jumped up, clutching my side. Outside, the black SUV I had spotted the night before was pulled into my driveway, blocking my sedan.

My father was walking up the walkway, accompanied by two men in dark suits holding leather portfolios. Behind them, my mother and sister were sitting in the running vehicle, staring at my house through tinted windows.

They hadn't listened. They thought I was bluffing.

I picked up my phone, dialing 911, but before I could press call, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from Arthur Vance:

Do not call the police yet. Look outside your back door.

Confused, I walked cautiously toward the kitchen window that overlooked the backyard. Standing by my patio table was Vance, accompanied by two officers from the Harris County Sheriff’s Department and a woman holding a digital recording rig.

Vance walked up to my back door, and I unlocked it to let him in.

"They brought Process Servers and an emergency court injunction," Vance whispered, stepping inside. "Your father filed a petition at 4:00 AM claiming you are mentally incompetent due to surgical anesthesia and post-operative psychosis. They are trying to take temporary custody of your children and your estate."

A surge of hot rage flooded my veins. "Mentally incompetent?! They left my children on a porch!"

"I know," Vance said calmly. "And that's precisely why I brought Deputy Miller and the Sheriff's Special Investigations unit. We have the Ring doorbell footage from your neighbor, Mrs. Miller. It clearly shows your mother leaving the kids at 11:30 AM, and it records Liam crying for hours."

The front doorbell rang violently. Then came a heavy bang on the wooden door.

"Emily! Open this door right now!" my father's voice bellowed from the front porch. "We have a court order! You are in no condition to care for those children or manage your affairs!"

Vance looked at me and nodded toward the front hall. "Let's go welcome your family."

I walked to the front door, flanked by the two uniformed sheriff's deputies. I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the heavy door wide open.

My father stood on the porch, mid-knock, his arm frozen in the air. His face turned pale as his eyes landed on the two armed deputies standing directly behind me. Behind him, my mother and Madison stepped out of the SUV, their arrogant expressions instantly melting into terror.

"Richard Vance," Deputy Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Step away from the threshold."

"What is the meaning of this?!" my father stuttered, taking a step back. "I am here on legal family business! My daughter is medical unfit—"

"Your daughter is perfectly fine, Mr. Vance," Arthur Vance said, stepping out from behind me. "In fact, she just signed a sworn affidavit detailing your family's grand fraud, child abandonment, and attempted extortion."

My sister Madison gasped, clutching her designer handbag. "Dad... what is happening?!"

"What's happening, Madison," I said, looking her straight in the eyes, "is that the party is over."
