Chapter 5 - THE SURGERY OF SHADOWS

"The heart arrived, but someone just cut the power to the operating room."The helicopter carrying the donor heart landed on the roof of the ABC Medical Center at 11:30 PM. Alejandro arrived simultaneously, his heart pounding in his chest as he watched the medical team rush the cooler containing the organ into the elevator.

Mariana was already being prepped for surgery. Through the glass window of the surgical theater, Alejandro watched them transfer her to the table. She looked so small beneath the massive surgical lights.

Before they wheeled her into the sterile zone, she looked through the glass and saw him. She couldn't speak through her oxygen mask, but she raised her hand and placed it over her heart, then pointed to him.

I gave it to you, she was saying.

"I love you," Alejandro mouthed against the glass, tears blurring his vision. "Fight for me, Mariana. Please."

At exactly 11:58 PM, the surgery began. Dr. Vargas made the initial incision. The heart-lung bypass machine took over her circulation. Mariana’s failing heart was removed. For a few agonizing moments, she had no heart inside her chest—her life depended entirely on technology and the donor organ waiting to be sutured in.

Suddenly, at exactly 12:00 AM—the precise minute the six-month wager ended—the entire hospital went pitch black.

The monitors died. The mechanical hum of the heart-lung bypass machine stopped. The emergency backup generators should have kicked in within three seconds, but they didn't. The hospital was plunged into an eerie, suffocating silence.

"What's happening?!" Alejandro shouted in the hallway, panicked.

Inside the operating room, surgical nurses were scrambling, using the flashlights on their phones to illuminate Mariana’s open chest.

"The bypass machine has a battery backup, but it only lasts for ten minutes!" Dr. Vargas shouted from inside the room. "The manual switch for the generator in the basement must have been tripped! Someone did this intentionally! If the power doesn't come back on in five minutes, she will suffer irreversible brain death!"

Alejandro didn't wait. He knew exactly who was behind this. Emilio. It was his final, desperate act of revenge to destroy Alejandro’s happiness.

Alejandro ran down the dark, concrete stairs toward the hospital’s basement generator room. The only light came from the screen of his phone. The air grew colder as he descended into the bowels of the building.

He kicked open the heavy metal door of the generator room.

There, standing in the shadows with a metal crowbar in his hand, was Emilio. His face was distorted with a manic, ruined hatred. He had bypassed the security guards using his old corporate credentials.

"If I lose my career, my money, and my freedom because of that girl, then you lose her too, Alex!" Emilio screamed, swinging the crowbar wildy. "The wager is over! It’s midnight! You lost!"

Alejandro dodged the swing, the metal bar slamming into a concrete pillar with a shower of sparks. Alejandro didn't feel fear; he felt a monstrous, protective rage.

He lunged at Emilio, tackling him to the ground. They fought brutally in the dark, rolling over hard cables and concrete. Emilio smashed a fist into Alejandro’s face, splitting his lip, but Alejandro didn't flinch. He grabbed Emilio by the collar and slammed his head repeatedly against the floor until the crowbar slipped from his friend’s grip.

"You never understood," Alejandro growled, pinning Emilio down, his forearm crushing Emilio’s throat. "This wasn't a bet. It was my salvation."

With a final surge of strength, Alejandro knocked Emilio unconscious. He scrambled up, seeing the main power lever chained shut and jammed with a thick steel bolt.

He looked at his watch. Three minutes left.

Alejandro grabbed the heavy crowbar from the floor. He wedged it into the jam, using every ounce of weight, muscle, and desperation in his body. His muscles screamed in agony, his palms bleeding against the cold steel.

"Live, Mariana! LIVE!" he roared.

With a loud, metallic SNAP, the bolt sheared off. Alejandro slammed the massive breaker switch upward.

Above him, the lights flashed back on.
