Chapter 2 - THE CRIMSON SNOW

"If Anyone Finds Out, We Are Ruined"—The Billionaire's Secret Daughter Becomes a Target
Jonathan reacted on instinct. He grabbed the heavy brass lantern from the plastic crate and clicked it off, plunging the basement into pitch darkness. He pulled Sophia tightly against his chest, pressing his hand gently over her mouth to muffle her whimpers.
"Shh, Sophia," he whispered directly into her ear, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "I need you to be as quiet as a mouse. Can you do that for me?"
She nodded against his palm, her tears hot against his skin.
Through the dark, the beam of a powerful tactical flashlight swept across the concrete pillars of the basement. The heavy footsteps drew closer, kicking aside plastic bottles and debris.
"I know you're down here, Clara," the voice sneered. It was a gruff, gravelly voice, thick with the accent of Brooklyn's waterfront. "You thought you could write that little article and ruin the boss? You’re smarter than that. But unfortunately for you, you’re not faster than us."
Jonathan's mind raced. What article? Who was the boss?
The flashlight beam swept dangerously close to the cardboard partition. Jonathan looked at Clara’s motionless body. If she didn’t get medical attention in the next thirty minutes, she would die of hypothermia. He couldn't afford a prolonged stealth game. He needed to get them out, now.
Jonathan reached into his pocket and grabbed his titanium smartphone. He didn't dial 911—if the police sirens started wailing, these men might panic and fire, or the media would catch wind of a billionaire caught in a derelict building with a dying woman. Instead, he hit a speed-dial code.
It rang once.
"Sir?" the voice of Arthur, Jonathan's trusted head of personal security and a former British Special Air Service operator, filled his earpiece.
"Arthur. Hudson Chambers basement. Service entrance. Bring the SUV, medical kit, and extraction gear. I have an active threat on site. Two minutes."
"On my way, sir."
"Who's there?!" the gravelly voice roared. The intruder had heard the faint whisper of Jonathan’s voice. The flashlight beam locked onto the cardboard partition.
Jonathan stood up, stepping out from behind the tarp. He stood tall, his tailored coat silhouetted in the glare of the intruder's flashlight.
"Turn that light down," Jonathan commanded, his voice dripping with pure, unadulterated ice.
The intruder gasped, lowering the flashlight slightly. The light revealed a burly man in a heavy utility jacket, his face scarred and his eyes wide with shock as he recognized the face of the billionaire who plastered the city's real estate billboards.
"Mr. Blake?" the man stammered, his hand instinctively drifting toward the waistband of his jeans, where the outline of a handgun was visible. "What... what are you doing here? This is a hazardous demolition zone."
"I am the owner of this building," Jonathan said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, shielding Sophia and Clara behind his massive frame. "The question is, who are you, and why are you threatening a dying woman and a child on my property?"
The man’s shock quickly turned into a cold, calculating grin. He pulled his hand away from his gun, realizing he couldn't just shoot a high-profile billionaire without catastrophic consequences.
"I'm just doing my job, Mr. Blake," the man said. "Clearing out the squatters. Your company's COO, Mr. Marcus Vance—your stepbrother—he hired my agency to ensure this building is completely vacant by midnight. No delays. He was very specific about that."
Jonathan felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. Marcus.
His stepbrother, Marcus, had been managing the Hudson Chambers redevelopment. Marcus had assured him all tenants had been relocated with generous packages.
"You're done for the night," Jonathan said, his voice deadly calm. "Leave. Now. Before I have my security team paint this basement with your blood."
The man laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "With respect, Mr. Blake, you don't know what you're stepping into. This woman... she's not just a squatter. She has something that belongs to us. Tell her to hand over the flash drive, and we’ll go."
Before Jonathan could reply, the heavy iron door at the top of the stairs slammed open with a deafening crash.
"Drop the weapon and step away from the executive!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the basement, accompanied by the blinding glare of three tactical lights mounted on submachine guns. Two of Arthur’s elite security operators flooded the basement, their red laser sights instantly locking onto the intruder’s chest.
The intruder raised his hands slowly. "Easy, boys. No harm done. I'm leaving."
"Let him go," Jonathan ordered Arthur. "We don't have time. We need to move Clara. Now!"
As Arthur’s men escorted the intruder out, Jonathan knelt down and scooped Clara’s limp, freezing body into his arms. She felt dangerously light, her skin icy even through her coat.
"Sophia, hold onto my coat," Jonathan commanded.
Sophia grabbed the fabric of his coat with a fierce, terrified grip.
They rushed up the stairs and out into the biting winter air. A black, armored Cadillac Escalade sat idling in the alley, its exhaust curling into the snowy sky. Arthur threw open the door, and Jonathan placed Clara gently onto the spacious leather seats.
As the SUV sped away toward a private medical clinic owned by Blake Enterprises, Jonathan looked down at Sophia, who was sitting next to him, staring at her unconscious mother.
His phone vibrated in his pocket. It was an encrypted message from his personal investigator.
Jonathan opened it. It was a digital scan of Clara's birth certificate for Sophia, retrieved from a secure database.
Under Father's Name, it read: Jonathan Vance Blake.
Jonathan stared at the screen, the breath caught in his throat.
Suddenly, Clara’s hand twitched. She gasped, her eyes fluttering open for a brief second. She looked at Jonathan, her gaze hazy and unfocused, before locking onto his face with sudden, terrifying clarity.
She grabbed his collar with a strength that shocked him.

"Jonathan..." she whispered, her breath smelling of metallic copper. "They... they know. Marcus knows about Sophia. He’s going to kill her."
Before Jonathan could speak, Clara's eyes rolled back, and the portable heart monitor Arthur had hooked her up to emitted a long, flat, terrifying beep.
