Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT RESCUEThat night, Jonathan didn't go home. He went to a secure, off-the-books facility his driver maintained. Tommy was there, safe, warm, and eating a dinner he didn't have to scrounge for.

“My mom will be back at the pharmacy at midnight,” Tommy said, his eyes bright with hope. “She told me if she ever got lost, she’d wait under the awning.”
Jonathan looked at his watch. 11:45 PM.
“Marcus, get the car.”
They reached the pharmacy just as the clock turned. Victoria Chen stood under the awning. She looked older, her hair streaked with premature grey, but her posture remained the same—unyielding, fierce.
Jonathan stepped out of the Mercedes.
She saw him. For a moment, she looked like she might run, but then she saw Tommy stepping out behind him.
“Tommy?” she gasped, her voice breaking.
The boy sprinted to her, and she dropped to her knees, clutching him.
Jonathan walked toward them, stopping ten feet away.
“Victoria,” he said.
She looked up at him, tears streaming down her face. “You shouldn't have found us, Jonathan. They’ll kill you.”
“They can try,” Jonathan said. He knelt down beside them. “I’m not a billionaire tonight, Victoria. I’m just a man who owes his life to you.”
“I have nothing left,” she whispered. “They took my medical license, my home, my identity.”
“You have your son,” Jonathan said, reaching out to touch Tommy’s shoulder. “And you have a friend who has a very, very powerful legal team.”
Suddenly, the night air was shattered by the sound of tires screeching. Three SUVs blocked the street.
