Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of TruthTwo weeks after the courtroom confrontation, the rain finally cleared over Charlotte, replaced by a crisp, bright autumn morning that painted the skyline in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

Mara stood on the top-floor balcony of the newly rebranded corporate headquarters, looking out over the city she had helped build from a cramped university lab fourteen years ago.

The wind caught her hair, but she didn't mind. For the first time in over a decade, she felt completely weightless.

A soft knock sounded at the glass door behind her.

"Come in, Dad."

Chief Judge Thomas Mercer stepped onto the balcony, holding two paper cups of black coffee from the corner cafe downstairs. He handed one to his daughter, leaning his elbows against the stainless-steel railing beside her.

"The federal prosecutor called me an hour ago," Thomas said, taking a sip of his coffee. "Derek’s defense team tried to file a motion for a psychiatric evaluation, claiming the stress of the corporate restructuring compromised his cognitive functions."

Mara smiled faintly, blowing on the surface of her coffee. "And what did the judge say?"

"Judge Ramirez threw the motion out before they finished reading the first paragraph," Thomas chuckled. "He's facing twenty counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and perjury. If he's lucky, he'll see a parole board before he's sixty-five."

Mara nodded slowly, her expression serene. "He always thought he was the smartest man in the room. He never realized that the foundation was holding him up the entire time."

Thomas turned his head, looking at his daughter with a deep, quiet pride.

"Your mother would have been proud of you, Mara. She knew you had my stubbornness, but she always worried you were too kind to survive in a world of wolves."

"Kindness isn't weakness, Dad," Mara said, looking down at her silver watch. "It’s just a very long memory."
