Chapter 4 - The Final SignatureThe silence that followed was so absolute that the hum of the refrigerator in the corner sounded like a roaring engine.

Julian stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled out of water. The man who had walked into the airport terminal thirty minutes ago draped in designer labels and smelling of expensive cologne now looked like a shipwreck survivor washed ashore on a desolate island.

“To… to you?” Julian whispered, his voice trembling so violently the words barely registered. “You got everything? But… but what about me? I’m her son! I carry her name! A court would throw that out in a second! No judge in New York would cut off a biological son in favor of a… a nobody!”

“A nobody?” I stepped forward, my gaze locking onto his with a fierce, unwavering intensity that made him flinch. “For three years, while you were living a lavish double life in Canada with Chloe, I wiped your mother’s forehead when her fevers spiked to 104 degrees. I carried her down the stairs in my own arms when the elevator in this house broke and we couldn’t afford the repair bill. When she cried out for her son in her sleep, I held her hand and lied to her, telling you were coming home soon just to give her peace before she closed her eyes forever.”

I pulled the clear document sleeve out of my bag—the very same one Julian had sneered at in the airport.

“You wanted a quick, clean, uncontested divorce without causing a scene, Julian? Here it is.”

I tossed the folder onto the floor at his feet. It landed right next to the shattered watch and the stack of debt notices.

“Read it,” I commanded.

Julian slowly dropped to one knee—not out of respect, but because his legs could no longer support his weight. With trembling fingers, he picked up the folder and flipped open the pages.

“What… what is this?” he muttered, scanning the legal text.

“It’s a standard dissolution of marriage,” I explained calmly. “With one special addendum drafted by my legal team this morning. Since you so generously offered me twenty thousand dollars at the airport to ‘start over,’ I have kindly accepted your financial settlement.”

Julian blinked, staring at a specific clause highlighted in bright yellow marker. “A… a lump-sum payment of twenty thousand dollars? From me? But I don’t have twenty thousand dollars! Between Chloe’s boutique shopping sprees, the luxury baby gear, and first-class flights, my accounts are completely maxed out!”

“Oh, don’t worry about your bank accounts, Julian,” I replied sweetly. “The agreement states that the twenty thousand dollars will be paid immediately using the cash you so dramatically threw at me at the airport terminal. Ten thousand in crisp hundred-dollar bills, plus the remaining balance covered by the resale value of those five luxury suitcases and your designer watch.”

Chloe shrieked, clutching the baby closer. “My suitcases?! My Louis Vuitton bags?! You can’t touch my luggage! That’s personal property!”

“Actually, under New York marital asset laws regarding abandonment and commingled funds acquired during separation, any luxury goods purchased within the last six months using hidden joint corporate assets are subject to immediate seizure and liquidation,” I said, reciting the legal terms with absolute precision. “Furthermore, since Julian formally abandoned the household for three years while incurring undisclosed debts, I am released from all joint liabilities.”

Julian stared up at me, his eyes wide with sheer desperation. “Elena… please. Please don’t do this. We can talk about this. We were married for five years! We built a life together! Can’t we just… split everything down the middle? Just give me enough to get back on my feet. Chloe has a baby—think of the child!”

I looked down at Chloe, who was now glaring at Julian with undisguised hatred and betrayal. The illusion of the wealthy corporate executive had completely shattered, leaving behind a pathetic, broke, debt-ridden liar.

“I am thinking of the child, Julian,” I said quietly. “Which is why I already spoke to Child Protective Services and a family law investigator regarding your undeclared financial abandonment and your history of fraudulent asset concealment in two separate countries.”

Chloe’s face turned the color of ash. “You… you did what?”

“You’ve got about twenty minutes before the local sheriff arrives to serve you both with eviction notices for this property and freeze whatever remains of Julian’s corporate credit cards,” I said, checking my wristwatch. “I suggest you pick up your baby, grab whatever clothes fit into a single plastic grocery bag, and walk out the front door before the locks automatically change.”
