Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail“Fortunately,” Mr. Sterling continued, his tone professional and reassuring, “our forensic accounting team cross-referenced the digital IP logs, bank transfer signatures, and corporate email servers. It quickly became evident that Mr. Vance forged your electronic signature on dozens of offshore transfer documents while systematically hiding assets from both his employer and you.”

“I have all the original communication logs saved on secure cloud servers,” I replied steadily. “Including the exact dates he blocked my phone number and ceased all financial communication.”

“That will be immensely helpful, Mrs. Vance,” the attorney noted. “Furthermore, because Mr. Vance attempted to defraud both his former employer and utilize fraudulent marital claims during his recent return to New York, the Queens District Attorney’s office has expanded their investigation. He is currently facing felony charges of grand larceny, identity falsification, and corporate fraud.”

I stared out the window at the quiet autumn street below, watching a falling leaf drift lazily down to the pavement. “Will he face prison time?”

“Given the scale of the embezzlement—totaling over eight hundred thousand dollars—and his recent attempts to flee jurisdiction, federal sentencing guidelines suggest a minimum of five to seven years without the possibility of parole,” Mr. Sterling stated matter-of-factly. “The reason I called, Mrs. Vance, is to inform you that our firm has officially cleared your name of any wrongdoing in the public corporate record. Your design agency’s accounts and your personal assets remain entirely untouched and fully protected.”

“Thank you, Mr. Sterling,” I said quietly. “I appreciate your thoroughness.”

“Not at all, Mrs. Vance. If there are any further inquiries from federal investigators regarding the estate or the trust fund, our office will handle them directly on your behalf. Good afternoon.”

The line clicked and went dead.

I set the phone down on the polished wooden desk and exhaled a long, slow breath. The final shadow of Julian’s betrayal had been completely wiped away, leaving behind clear skies and an open horizon.

My design business, Vance Creative Studio, had just landed its largest corporate contract to date—a nationwide branding campaign for an emerging literary publisher. My work was being featured in national design magazines, and for the first time in my life, every ounce of effort, late-night dedication, and creative passion I poured into my work belonged entirely to me.
