Chapter 8 - A New DynastyFive years later, the grand ballroom of the Vance Foundation headquarters was filled to the brim with laughter, music, and the bright chatter of hundreds of guests celebrating the annual charity gala.
At the center of the spacious dance floor stood a five-year-old boy in a miniature tuxedo, laughing hysterically as he chased a cluster of silver balloons around the room, his bright, intelligent eyes full of unbridled joy and limitless potential.
I stood near the edge of the ballroom, dressed in a sleek, emerald-green evening gown, holding a glass of sparkling cider as I watched our son run toward his uncle. Arthur scooped Leo up into the air with a booming laugh, tossing him gently before setting him on his shoulders as Leo shrieked with delight.
A polite cough drew my attention away.
Clara, now senior vice president of operations, stepped up beside me with a tablet in hand. “Mrs. Vance, the international trade delegation from Geneva has arrived, and they’re asking for your final sign-off on the new global sustainability initiative.”
I smiled, taking the tablet and signing my name swiftly and decisively at the bottom of the digital ledger.
“Tell them I’ll be right there, Clara. Thank you.”
As Clara walked away, Arthur walked over, carrying a laughing Leo on his shoulders. He stopped right in front of me, leaning down so our eyes met.
“You know,” Arthur said, a warm, teasing smile playing on his lips, “for a woman who started out with nothing more than a rusted steering wheel and a folder of secret documents, you’ve built quite an empire.”

I reached up, gently adjusting his silk bowtie, and looked past him at the shining banner hanging above the grand staircase, emblazoned with the words: VANCE GLOBAL: STRENGTH, INTEGRITY, AND NEW BEGINNINGS.
“I didn't build an empire just to rule it, Arthur,” I whispered, leaning up to kiss his cheek as Leo wrapped his arms around both of our necks in a tight, clumsy hug. “I built it to make sure nobody ever has to stand alone in the dark again.”
