Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Vance EmpireJulian froze mid-step, his hand outstretched toward Dr. Harrison, hovering in the air like a broken mechanism. He slowly turned his head toward the doorway, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror.

“A-Arthur?” Julian stammered, his voice cracking like a terrified schoolboy. “No... that’s impossible. You’re dead. The helicopter crash... the authorities said nobody survived!”

Arthur Vance—Julian’s older, legally erased half-brother—stepped fully into the harsh light of the delivery room. He didn’t look like a ghost. He looked like an apex predator returning to reclaim his territory. His jawline was set in granite, and a faint, jagged scar ran down the side of his neck, partially hidden by his collar—the permanent souvenir of the assassination attempt Julian and Eleanor had orchestrated three years ago.

Eleanor gripped the edge of the rolling medical cart, her knuckles turning bone-white. Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. “You... you coward. You should be rotting at the bottom of the Atlantic.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, Stepmother,” Arthur said, his voice smooth, dripping with a lethal sarcasm that made my skin crawl with satisfaction. “Death is entirely too permanent for a man with unfinished business. And looking at the state of my family estate... I’m glad I booked the early flight back.”

Julian backed away until his spine hit the heart monitor, causing the machine to emit a frantic, rhythmic beep. “You have no proof of anything! Everything you owned reverted to the primary trust under corporate succession laws! My laws!”

“Your laws?” Arthur let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated through the room. He walked past Julian without even sparing him a glance, stopping right beside my hospital bed.

For a brief second, the terrifying, ruthless billionaire softened. He looked down at the tiny baby bundled in Dr. Harrison’s arms, then looked up at me. His eyes weren't cold anymore; they burned with an intense, protective devotion that caught me completely off guard.

“You did it,” Arthur murmured softly, reaching out to gently brush a damp strand of hair from my forehead. “You held on.”

“You... you knew?” I whispered, my voice trembling as the pieces of a massive, terrifying puzzle finally snapped into place. “Arthur... the contract auditor job at the ruthless law firm... the leaked shell-company files... the offshore transfer logs left on my laptop... You set all of that up for me.”

Arthur smiled faintly, his thumb tracing my cheekbone. “I told you years ago, Vivian—when Julian tricked you into that loveless marriage to keep you away from the family assets—that I would protect you. Even if I had to do it from the shadows while the world thought I was dead.”

Julian let out a sound like a wounded animal. “Vivian?! You were sleeping with him behind my back?!”

“Sleeping with him?” I shot back, a surge of adrenaline overriding every ounce of physical exhaustion in my body. I pushed myself up against the pillows, glaring at my trembling ex-husband. “Julian, I never even spoke two words to Arthur while we were married. But unlike you, Arthur didn't hide his identity behind a stolen legacy. He was the anonymous benefactor who funded my rent when you threw me onto the street. He was the one who made sure I had the legal documents to destroy you.”

Eleanor recovered her voice first, her tone regaining its venomous authority. “It doesn’t matter! Even if Arthur is alive, the Vance corporate charter states that any child born out of wedlock—or through illicit conspiracy—has zero claim to the primary holdings! Julian is still the legal CEO!”

Dr. Harrison cleared his throat loudly, holding up a thick manila folder that he had pulled from the medical records desk.

“Actually, Mrs. Vance,” Dr. Harrison said, flipping the folder open to reveal a set of stamped, certified documents. “There is a minor technicality you forgot to check before you had Julian freeze Vivian’s insurance.”

Julian whipped his head around. “What technicality?”

“The hospital isn't just a random clinic,” Dr. Harrison said calmly. “This facility is entirely funded by the Arthur Vance Foundation. And according to the pre-nuptial agreement Vivian forced your legal team to draft—which you never actually read because you were too busy signing away your shares in the dark—any child born to a legal spouse under this roof automatically triggers a clause transferring primary voting rights of the entire Vance conglomerate to the mother... and her designated guardian.”

Dr. Harrison turned the page and pointed to a signature at the bottom.

“And Arthur’s name is right here as the legal guardian of both Vivian and the newborn heir.”
