Chapter 4 - THE SNAKE'S NEST

The atmosphere in the Bellandi mansion had completely shifted. The heavy, oppressive air of a dying house was replaced by the tense, electric vibration of a war room.
Julian and Tomas were locked in the wine cellar, heavily guarded. Upstairs, in the grand library, Roman sat behind a massive mahogany desk, a glass of pure, unfiltered water in front of him. Elena stood by the window, watching the rain finally begin to clear, revealing the gray Chicago skyline.
"You have a lot of nerve interfering with my judgment," Roman said, though there was no malice in his voice.
"I'm a healer, Mr. Bellandi. I don't like watching people get shot in front of me," Elena replied, turning around. "And I was telling the truth. The Indian Aconite used on you was highly refined. It requires a pharmaceutical-grade laboratory to extract it safely without killing the chemist. Julian doesn't have those kinds of connections."
Roman leaned forward, intertwining his long fingers. "You're right. Julian is a consumer, not a supplier. Tomas’s phone logs were cleared, but we managed to recover a single encrypted satellite coordinate pinged from a location north of the city. A private medical research facility owned by Vanguard Pharmaceuticals."
Elena stiffened. "Vanguard? They’re one of the largest medical conglomerates in the country. Why would they want a mafia boss dead?"
"Because I own 30% of their logistics and shipping routes through the Great Lakes," Roman said, his eyes darkening. "And recently, I blocked a massive, undocumented shipment they tried to move through my docks. I suspected they were trafficking illegal synthetic narcotics. It seems they decided it was cheaper to replace me with my brother, who would gladly sign over the shipping rights in exchange for the throne."
He stood up, walking over to Elena. Standing full height, he towered over her, an imposing figure of shadows and sharp angles. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy gold chain with a signet ring attached to it—the crest of the Bellandi family.
"You saved my life, Elena Vale," he said, holding the chain out to her. "In my world, a debt like that is paid in blood or gold. Since you don't like blood, take this. Anyone in this city who sees this ring will protect you with their life."
Elena looked at the heavy gold piece. "I don't want your ring, Roman. I want to go back to my apothecary. I have customers waiting, and my plants need watering."
Roman let out a short, sharp laugh—a sound his men hadn't heard in years. "You really are something else. But you aren't safe yet. Vanguard knows you broke their poison. They will come for you to protect their secret. You stay here, under my protection, until this is finished."

Before Elena could argue, the library doors flew open. A blood-stained guard stumbled into the room, his chest gasping for air.
"Boss..." the guard wheezed, collapsing onto the Persian rug. "The cellar... someone launched an attack from the inside. Julian and Tomas... they’re gone. And they took the strike team with them."
