Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of ShadowsThe ink on Enzo Marchetti’s death certificate was barely dry when the true cost of his betrayal began to surface. Luca sat in the subterranean command center of the Romano estate, the ambient blue glow of multiple monitors reflecting off his sharp jawline. Elena stood behind him, scrolling through a decrypted ledger recovered from Enzo’s private safe.

"It wasn't just the Chicago docks," Elena said, her voice tight with suppressed anger. "Enzo had been siphoning assets to Viktor Rostova for eighteen months. Real estate holdings in Munich, shipping lanes in the Mediterranean, shell accounts in the Caymans—he traded the family’s entire European logistics network for a guaranteed escape route."

Luca didn't look up from the terminal. His face was a mask of cold, calculating fury. "And the board?"

"They're watching," Elena warned. "The old guard in New York and Palermo think you're vulnerable because a low-level waitress and an unverified flash drive just upended our entire operation. They're convening a tribunal in three days."

"Let them come," Luca said quietly, his hand closing into a fist. "They forgot who built this table."

Upstairs, far away from the terminal screens, Emma sat in the grand library. The heavy mahogany shelves and rare leather-bound books felt suffocating. She wore a soft gray cashmere sweater that Elena had insisted on, but her canvas shoulder bag rested on the floor beside her chair. Inside it, her father’s wrench felt like an anchor to a world that made sense—a world where an engine either turned over or it didn't.

The heavy oak door swung open silently. Luca stepped inside, shedding his jacket over a chair and loosening his tie. The lines of exhaustion around his eyes were unmistakable.

"You should be resting," Emma said, not looking up from a book on Chicago architecture she wasn't really reading.

"I don't sleep much anymore," Luca replied, walking over and sitting down on the edge of the leather armchair. He looked at her, really looked at her—the quiet defiance in her posture, the way she refused to be intimidated by the wealth or the danger surrounding her. "The tribunal meets in New York in seventy-two hours. They expect me to step down, or worse, hand over control to the council."

Emma closed the book. "And what does the council want?"

"Blood, structure, and submission," Luca said softly. "They want a king who rules by fear. They don't know what to do with a man who got saved by a waitress with a wrench."

"Then show them," Emma said, her slate-gray eyes locking onto his with absolute conviction. "You aren't your father, and you aren't Enzo. Stop trying to play their game by their rules."

Luca stared at her, a slow, genuine smile breaking through his hardened expression. "You really are dangerous, Emma Carter."
