Chapter 19 - The Morning AfterThe snow had stopped by dawn, leaving Chicago buried under a pristine, blinding blanket of white.

Inside the Romano estate, the fires crackled warmly in the hearths. Viktor Rostova and his remaining men were in federal custody, facing federal racketeering and terrorism charges that would ensure they never saw daylight again. The syndicate capos had unanimously voted to reaffirm Luca’s leadership, completely purging the last remnants of corruption.
Emma sat on the private balcony overlooking Lake Michigan, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, sipping hot tea.
The glass door slid open, and Luca stepped out onto the balcony, holding a steaming mug of his own. He walked over, leaning against the railing beside her, looking out over the sparkling expanse of ice and water.
"The federal prosecutor says Rostova’s empire is completely dismantled," Luca said softly. "We're clean, Emma. For the first time in twenty years, the Romano name is entirely legitimate."
Emma smiled faintly, blowing on her tea. "Good. Because I was starting to think your family was bad for my laundry bill."
Luca laughed, turning to face her. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, familiar velvet box.
"You know," Luca said, his voice dropping into a softer, more vulnerable register, "when you fixed my battery in the rain on Route 19, I thought it was just a random twist of bad luck."
"And now?" Emma looked up at him, her slate-gray eyes catching the morning sunlight.
"Now," Luca said, dropping smoothly to one knee on the snowy balcony floor, "I know it was the best thing that ever happened to me."
He opened the box. Inside rested the custom diamond ring shaped like an adjustable wrench, glinting brilliantly in the winter sun.

"Will you stay, Emma? Not as a guest. Not as a hostage to fortune. But as my partner, for every road ahead—good or bad?"
Emma looked down at the ring, then up into the dark, steady eyes of the man who had traded his entire underworld empire just to keep her safe.
