Chapter 5 - The Dismantling of an EmpireBy noon, the Halston estate looked less like a home and more like a corporate liquidator’s warehouse.

News vans crowded the private gates at the end of the long oak-lined driveway, their satellite dishes pointed skyward like metal sunflowers drinking in the scandal. Within hours, the headline had broken across national financial networks: Sterling Biomedical Heir Apparent Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Fraud and Domestic Abuse Scandal.

I sat in the quiet library on the second floor, a room lined with leather-bound books Grant had bought by the yard simply to look intellectual for visiting investors.

The door opened softly, and Serena Cole stepped inside, carrying a thick sheaf of papers and two cups of coffee in simple cardboard mugs.

“Real coffee,” Serena said with a faint smile, setting one of the mugs on the mahogany desk before me. “No Seattle roast required.”

“Thank you,” I said, wrapping my hands around the warm paper. “How is the board reacting?”

“Like rats fleeing a sinking ship,” Serena replied, taking a seat opposite me. “As soon as Adrian Hale presented the emergency voting proxy activating your controlling shares, the board voted unanimously to strip Grant of his CEO title. They appointed an interim management team from Sterling Financial Oversight. By tomorrow morning, the name Halston will be scrubbed from every corporate letterhead.”

“And Lucinda?”

“She’s packing,” Serena said, sipping her coffee. “Her personal accounts linked to the Halston Holdings slush fund have been frozen. She’s discovering, much to her horror, that her pearl necklace is about the most valuable asset she legally owns.”

I looked out the window toward the rose gardens. The storm had finally cleared, leaving the wet stone gleaming under a pale afternoon sun.

For three years, I had lived in this house like a ghost, measuring my words, hiding my bruises, and waiting for a moment when justice wasn't just an abstract concept whispered in lawyers' offices, but an absolute, undeniable reality.

“The first court date for the domestic abuse charges is set for Thursday,” Serena continued, watching me closely. “Grant’s defense team is already trying to spin it as a mutual disagreement, but with the audio logs, the medical timestamps from your attorney’s file, and Elise Rowan’s testimony, it’s airtight.”

“Let them try,” I said calmly. “Grant spent years believing that if he shouted loud enough, the truth would simply move out of his way. It’s time he learned how quiet the world gets when nobody is listening to him anymore.”
