Chapter 5 - THE GILDED CAGE

The Vitelli estate was a fortress built on a cliff overlooking the ocean. High stone walls, security cameras, and armed guards gave it the air of a medieval castle modernized for survival.

By morning, Toby was brought safely to the estate. The young boy was fascinated by the grand hallways, the huge garden, and the sight of the roaring ocean visible from the floor-to-ceiling windows. For the first time in his life, he didn't have to struggle to breathe; the coastal air was clean, and Marco had arranged for a private pediatric specialist to reside in the guest house.

Yet, Jenny felt trapped in a gilded cage.

She found Marco sitting in the estate's massive library, staring at a map of the city laid out across an antique mahogany desk.

"He's happy," Jenny said, stepping into the warm light of the room. "Toby. He thinks we're on vacation at a hotel."

Marco looked up, the harsh lines of his face softening slightly. "He deserves to think that."

"And what about us, Marco?" Jenny asked, walking over to the desk. "How long do we stay here? I can't live like a fugitive."

"Until I eliminate the threat," Marco said coldly. "Frank Moretti thinks he can use you to destabilize my position in the Syndicate. He thinks if he threatens you, I will yield my territory."

"Will you?" she asked softly.

Marco stood up and walked around the desk until he was inches from her. "I have spent my whole life building an empire based on fear, Jenny. But when I saw you in that pawn shop, counting those dirty bills just to keep your son alive, I realized something. Real strength isn't about how many men you control or how much blood you spill. It's about what you're willing to endure to protect what matters."

He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"I won't yield," Marco whispered. "I will burn Moretti's empire to the ground before I let him touch a single hair on your head."

Jenny’s breath caught in her throat. The danger surrounding them seemed to evaporate, replaced by a sudden, intense heat that flared between them. She leaned into his touch, realizing that despite the darkness that followed Marco Vitelli, he was the only man who had ever made her feel entirely safe.
