Chapter 6 - BLOOD IN THE WATER

The peace did not last.

Three days later, Marco received news that shook the foundation of the Syndicate. Two of his major shipping warehouses along the river were firebombed simultaneously. Millions in cargo were destroyed, and four of his men were hospitalized.

A meeting of the Syndicate Commission was called at an abandoned marble quarry on the outskirts of the city—neutral ground where the heads of the five families gathered to settle disputes.

"Do not go, Marco," Jenny begged him in the courtyard as his convoy prepared to leave. "It's a trap. You know it is."

"If I don't go, the Commission will declare me unfit to lead, and open war will break out on every street in the city," Marco said, adjusting his cufflinks. "I have to settle this with Moretti face-to-face."

He pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply under the shadow of the estate’s archway. "Stay inside the perimeter. Don't open the gates for anyone except Leo."

Two hours later, Marco stood in the cavernous, cold stone room of the quarry building.

Frank Moretti, an older man with sneering lips and heavy gold rings, sat at the center of the wooden table. Beside him sat Dominick Russo—Marco’s own uncle.

Marco stopped in his tracks, his eyes narrowing as he realized the true depth of the betrayal.

"Uncle," Marco said smoothly, though his heart turned to stone. "I see you've found a new business partner."

"You've become soft, Marco," Dominick sneered, standing up alongside Moretti. "You let a poor girl from the slums distract you while our territory slipped away. The family needs a leader who rules with iron, not sentiment."

"This was never about Moretti," Marco realized, stepping back as six armed men stepped out from the shadows behind the pillars, training their submachine guns on him. "It was you. You fed Moretti the information about Jenny."

"Of course I did," Dominick laughed wickedly. "She was the perfect bait to make you reckless. And now, Marco, your reign ends here. Once you're dead, I take the Vitelli throne, and Moretti takes the docks."

Moretti smiled cruelly. "And don't worry about your little girlfriend at the estate. My men are already breach-testing the back gate."
