Chapter 10 - The Last PageSix months later, the front page of the Chicago Tribune carried a headline that sent shockwaves through the political and underworld establishments of the Midwest:

FEDERAL CORRUPTION RING DISMANTLED: FORMER PROSECUTOR ARTHUR VANCE CONVICTED IN SWEEPING RACKETEERING TRIAL. Cicero Docks Return to Independent Management Under Community Trust; Moretti Estate Declares Full Corporate Restructuring.

In the private study of the Moretti mansion, Adrian sat at his mahogany desk, reading the article with mild indifference. The war was over. The federal task force had been completely overhauled, Vance was facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary, and Marcone’s remnants had scattered to the winds.

He folded the newspaper and set it aside.

The house was filled with a sound that hadn't echoed through its halls in four long years: music.

Soft piano melodies drifted up from the grand foyer. Footsteps pattered across the marble floor, followed by high-pitched giggles and the warm, melodic sound of a woman laughing.

Adrian stood up and walked out onto the landing.

Downstairs, the front double doors stood wide open, letting in the golden autumn sunlight of late October.

Emma was running across the foyer in a pair of shiny new red shoes, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Marcus had somehow procured as a “security deposit” for the estate. Sofia stood near the doorway, wearing an elegant emerald-green dress, watching them with a radiant, carefree smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

She looked up and saw Adrian standing on the landing, watching them from above.

Instead of turning back to her work, Sofia didn't look away. She raised her hand and gestured upward with a playful, inviting wave.

Come down, her eyes said. The table is set.

Adrian smiled—a real, unreserved smile that completely erased the ghost of the man they used to call Stone.

He walked down the grand marble staircase, his hand sliding along the polished wooden banister, stepping out of the shadows of his past and directly into the brilliant, living light of his future.

As he reached the bottom step, Emma ran over and grabbed his hand, tugging him toward the open doors where the autumn leaves were falling like gold coins across the lawn.

“Hurry up, Mr. Moretti!” Emma laughed, pulling him forward. “Mommy made pancakes, and the world is waiting!”

Adrian squeezed her small hand, looked across the sunlit foyer at Sofia, and took his first real step forward into a life he had never thought he deserved.

And for the first time in three years, the house on Lake Michigan was truly, beautifully alive.
