Chapter 5 - The Phantom of ZurichThe words hung heavy in the damp night air.

"What do you mean, protect me from himself?" I demanded, my hands shaking as I held Leo beneath my coat. "Thomas loved me! He was building a life with me!"

"Thomas was living a double life for five years, Blair," Marcus said softly, bandaging his bleeding shoulder with a torn strip of his shirt. "He discovered that the Miller corporation was a front for money laundering when you were three months pregnant. When he tried to back out, the syndicate forced his hand. They threatened to kill you and the baby if he blew the whistle. He spent six months transferring assets into an untraceable Swiss account, but to make sure you were completely safe from legal prosecution, he had to cut all ties. He had to die in the eyes of the law."

"So he abandoned me?" Tears burned my eyes, hotter than the rain pouring down my face. "He let me think he was dead? He let me go to that funeral alone? He let his mother and brother push me into the mud while I went into labor?!"

"He didn't know Margaret and Philip would do that!" Marcus insisted. "He thought they would act like human beings! He was already in international transit when the funeral took place. By the time I reached him in Zurich to tell him what happened at the cemetery... Thomas nearly lost his mind."

Marcus pulled out a small black satellite tablet from his coat pocket and powered it on. The screen flickered to life, showing a secure, encrypted video calling terminal.

"He's been waiting for this call since you got out of the hospital," Marcus said, handing me the tablet. "Talk to him, Blair. Ask him yourself."

My heart pounded against my ribs. I stared at the glowing screen. The line chimed once, twice, three times.

Then, the video connected.

A face appeared on the screen. He was thinner, his beard grown out, a long faint scar running along his jawline from the staged crash. But those eyes—the same soft, honey-brown eyes that used to look at me across the breakfast table—were undeniably Thomas's.

"Blair..." his voice came through the speaker, choked with raw emotion. "Oh God, Blair..."

I stood in the dark, rainy woods, holding our son, staring at a dead man.

"You're alive," I whispered, my voice dripping with equal parts grief, love, and bitter fury.

"I had to do it, Blair," Thomas pleaded, tears streaming down his face on the screen. "Philip had put a hit out on me. If I stayed, they would have used you as leverage. I had to make them think I was gone so I could dismantle their network from the shadows!"

"Do you have any idea what happened at your funeral, Thomas?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet. "Do you have any idea what your mother said to me while my water broke on your grave?"

Thomas squeezed his eyes shut, nodding painfully. "Marcus told me. I... I swear to you, Blair, if I had been there, I would have killed them with my bare hands. I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry."

"I don't need your apology, Thomas," I said coldly. "Your mother is in handcuffs. Your brother is dead. The cartel mercenaries are being rounded up by federal agents. The Miller family is destroyed. What do you want now?"

"I want you to bring Leo and come to Switzerland," Thomas begged. "We have two hundred million dollars in the Zurich account. We can buy a house in the mountains. We can start over. A new identity, a new life. Just you, me, and our son."

I looked down at tiny Leo, who was sleeping peacefully, blissfully unaware of the war that had been fought over his existence.

Then I looked back at the screen, at the man I had loved more than life itself.

"No," I said firmly.

Thomas blinked, stunned. "Blair... what?"

"You chose to run, Thomas," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "You chose to play god with our lives. You let me grieve. You let me suffer. You let me believe I was alone in this world. You might have done it to protect me, but you broke something in me that can never be fixed."

"Blair, please!" Thomas cried out. "Don't do this!"

"I am taking the Zurich money," I stated, my tone unyielding. "Not for myself, but as a legal settlement for the child you abandoned. I am giving half of it to the federal victims' fund to repay the people your family scammed, and the rest will be placed in a trust for Leo. You stay dead, Thomas. To the world... and to us."

"Blair, wait!"

I ended the call, shutting down the tablet and tossing it into the mud.
