Chapter 4 - The Rat Flees the ShipBy 6:00 PM, the rain had turned into a torrential downpour, flooding the lower avenues of Seattle and turning traffic into a standstill of red brake lights.

Inside the executive washroom on the tenth floor—which had not yet been physically re-keyed—Vanessa Cole stood in front of the illuminated marble vanity mirror, frantically trying to fix her ruined mascara. Her hands shook so badly she nearly snapped her eyebrow pencil in half.

The digital empire she and her brother had spent three years building—siphoning funds, replacing loyal veterans with sycophants, and slowly starving the company’s creative soul—had collapsed in less than two hours.

The door behind her clicked open.

Vanessa spun around, clutching a heavy crystal perfume bottle like a weapon.

It wasn't Evelyn. It was her brother, Grant. His tie was undone, his collar drenched in sweat, and his expression was a mask of sheer panic.

“We’re done,” Grant whispered, leaning against the doorframe. “Shaw’s people have seized our personal laptops from the office. They found the offshore ledgers, Vanessa. They found everything. If we don’t get out of the country tonight, we’re looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary.”

“Don’t panic!” Vanessa hissed, stepping close to him and grabbing his lapel. “We still have options. We have the emergency contingency funds parked in the Swiss subsidiary—”

“Frozen,” Grant interrupted, his voice breaking. “Every single account tied to our names, our spouses', and our shell companies has been hit with a global freezing order by Judge Holloway. Evelyn didn't just inherit the trust, Vanessa. She inherited the master cryptographic keys that Samuel Vale set up before he lost his speech. She owns the digital soul of this company.”

A heavy knock echoed on the outer door of the suite.

“Mr. and Ms. Cole?” a deep, authoritative voice called out. “Federal marshals. Open the door.”

Grant looked at Vanessa, all the arrogance and swagger of the high-flying corporate executive completely evaporated, leaving behind a terrified boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

“Run,” Grant whispered.

He bolted for the private service stairs at the back of the executive suite, shoving open the heavy fire door. Vanessa followed him into the pitch-black stairwell, their expensive shoes echoing wildly against the concrete steps as they fled downward into the dark, rain-soaked belly of the building.
