His co-conspirator, Marcus Vance, received a twenty-year sentence for financial fraud, conspiracy, and extortion. The offshore shell companies were completely dismantled, their remaining assets seized and permanently distributed among victims of corporate fraud and child welfare advocacy programs.
And me?
I sat on the wide, sun-drenched veranda of my new home, sipping a cup of steaming coffee while watching the morning light dance across the peaks of the distant mountains.
The air was crisp and clean. The snow had long since melted away, replaced by vibrant green pines and the bright, hopeful blooms of early summer.
A soft pair of small arms wrapped around my knee, followed by an enthusiastic giggle.
I looked down.
Lily was standing on her own two feet now, walking with a wobbly, joyful determination, holding a bright yellow plastic toy in her hands. She looked up at me with big, bright, fearless eyes, flashing a gummy, radiant smile that could melt the coldest winter frost.
I knelt down, sweeping her up into my arms and burying my face in her soft, sweet-smelling hair.
“You ready for a big day, sweetheart?” I whispered against her cheek.
Lily giggled, patting my face with her tiny hand.
I stood up, holding my daughter tightly against my chest—not out of fear, not out of desperation, but out of pure, unshakeable strength.
