Chapter 7 - The Ghost from the PastThe room fell instantly silent.

Maxwell’s smile vanished, his body instantly stiffening into a posture of coiled, aggressive defense. The warmth of the moment evaporated, replaced by a sudden, chilling dread.

"Custody?" Maxwell repeated, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Emily is my legally adopted daughter. The adoption papers were finalized by Judge Harrison two days ago."

"She claims she's not a legal guardian through adoption," the receptionist’s voice crackled frantically over the radio. "She claims she’s... she’s Emily’s biological mother!"

Emily froze. The box of crayons slipped from her small fingers, clattering loudly against the hospital floor. The bright, joyful light in her dark eyes instantly vanished, replaced by a deep, shivering terror.

She shrank back against the pillows, pulling the blanket up to her chin, her small frame trembling violently.

"No..." Emily whispered, her voice cracking into a sob. "No, please... don't let her in here."

Maxwell’s heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He turned his fierce, protective gaze toward the little girl, gently cupping her pale cheek with his warm hand.

"Who is it, Emily?" Maxwell asked softly, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Who is at the door?"

Before Emily could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway outside Room 417.

Clack, clack, clack.

Sharp, hurried heels marching with absolute entitlement. Two Boston police officers in dark blue uniforms appeared at the doorway, followed by a woman in an expensive, slightly rumpled trench coat.

She looked breathless, her hair disheveled, but her eyes possessed a hard, desperate ambition that immediately made Maxwell's stomach turn.

"Emily!" the woman cried out, pushing past the officers and stepping into the room.

Emily whimpered, pressing herself so hard against the headboard she looked like she wanted to melt right through the wall. "Go away... please go away, Mother..."

Maxwell stood up slowly, stepping between the woman and Emily’s bed like an impenetrable wall of granite.

"Stop right there," Maxwell commanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl that froze the woman in her tracks.

The woman glared up at Maxwell, her chest heaving. "Who the hell are you? Get away from my daughter! I am Clara Vance—Emily’s biological mother!"

Vance.

The name hit the room like a physical blow.

Maxwell’s eyes narrowed into absolute slits. "Vance. As in Thomas and Julianne Vance?"

Clara faltered for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting nervously toward the officers behind her. "Yes! Thomas is my brother, and Julianne is my sister! They called me the moment they found out this billionaire was pouring millions into a dying child! And now you expect me to sit back while some stranger tries to steal my child?!"

"Steal her?" Maxwell stepped closer, towering over Clara, his face carved out of ice. "Where were you when your daughter was abandoned in a charity ward with seventy-two hours left to live? Where were you when your brother called her a 'useless charity case' and tried to pull her life support to save hospital budget?"

Clara’s face flushed bright red. "I—I was traveling! I had personal matters to attend to in New York! I didn't know she was terminal—"

"You didn't care," Maxwell interrupted, his voice dripping with pure disgust. "You only care now that my name is attached to her trust fund. You only care now that she is worth something to your corrupt family."

"She is my flesh and blood!" Clara screamed hysterically, trying to push past Maxwell. "Officer! Do your job! Arrest this man for kidnapping!"

The two police officers stepped forward awkwardly, looking at Maxwell Bennett, whose face was splashed across financial and tech magazines worldwide, and then at Clara.

"Ma'am," the senior officer spoke cautiously. "Mr. Bennett has legal custody documents signed by Judge Harrison—"

"Those documents were obtained fraudulently!" Clara shrieked, pulling a crumpled paper from her purse. "I never signed away my parental rights! I am her biological mother, and under state law, my rights supersede any emergency guardianship!"

Maxwell looked at the paper in her hand, then slowly reached into his suit jacket, pulling out his own encrypted tablet. He tapped the screen once, a cold, predatory smirk touching the corner of his lips.

"You didn't sign away your rights, Clara?" Maxwell asked softly. "True. But three years ago, when you checked Emily into a state foster facility and signed an official abandonment waiver to avoid child support prosecution... did you forget about that signature?"

Clara’s face instantly turned the color of ash. All the fight drained out of her body in a single second.

"How... how do you have that?" she whispered, staggering backward.

"I own the digital registry where your records were filed," Maxwell said, his voice echoing coldly through the room. "And my legal team already processed a permanent termination of your parental rights this morning, backed by signed testimonies from hospital staff proving gross child neglect."

Maxwell stepped forward, pointing toward the door.

"You have ten seconds to walk out of this hospital," Maxwell whispered, his eyes blazing with absolute wrath. "If you ever come within five miles of my daughter again, I won't just ruin your family financially. I will erase you."
