Chapter 3 - The Crimson Dragon's Ultimatum

The silence inside the damaged Rolls-Royce was terrifying.
On the phone screen, Clara was crying, her mouth covered with thick silver tape, her eyes pleading desperately for help. The man with the red dragon watch smiled serenely into the camera, completely unbothered by the ticking clock.
"You have two hours, Maxwell," the man said smoothly. "Don't bother involving your police friends. Detective Vance? He's currently on our payroll. If you call him, he'll personally drop off the arrest warrant for you for kidnapping and child endangerment. Choose wisely."
The screen went black.
"Dad..." Ethan gasped, tears spilling down his pale cheeks. "They're going to hurt Miss Clara! But... but they want to take Lily!"
Lily looked from the blank phone screen to Ethan, and then up at Maxwell. Her small shoulders dropped, the fierce survival instinct giving way to a tragic, heartbreaking acceptance.
"You can give me to them," Lily said quietly. She began to unbutton the heavy fleece-lined coat Maxwell had given her. "I'm used to running. I can try to escape again. Miss Clara was nice to Ethan. You shouldn't lose her because of me."
Maxwell stared at her. This little girl, who had been sleeping on cold concrete for weeks, who had nothing to her name but a torn shirt and a heart full of scars, was willing to trade her freedom—her life—for a stranger.
With a sudden, powerful movement, Maxwell reached out and pulled Lily into a fierce, protective embrace, wrapping his arm around her tiny frame.
"Listen to me, Lily Tucker," Maxwell said, his voice trembling with an intense, unshakeable power. "You saved my son’s life tonight. You gave him your coat when you were freezing to death. As long as I am breathing, nobody—nobody—will ever touch a hair on your head again. You are not a bargained piece. You are under the protection of the Blackwood family."
Lily froze in his arms, her body stiffening in shock. She had never been held like this. She had never heard anyone speak for her with such absolute, terrifying authority. For the first time in two years, the dam inside her broke, and hot tears began to stream down her dirty cheeks.
"Marcus," Maxwell snapped, leaning forward toward the driver's seat. "Change of plans. We aren't going to the hospital or the mansion."
"Where to, sir?" Marcus asked, his jaw set tight as he maneuvered the vehicle through a dark alleyway to lose any potential tails.
"The Vault," Maxwell said coldly.
Marcus’s eyes widened in the rearview mirror. "Sir... the Vault hasn't been opened since... since the accident."
"Open it," Maxwell ordered. "And call my private tactical team. Section 9."
Twenty minutes later, the Rolls-Royce pulled into an underground garage beneath an unassuming, windowless brick building in Brooklyn. A massive hydraulic steel door slid open, revealing a ultra-high-tech command facility filled with server racks, weapons caches, and sophisticated monitoring arrays. This was Maxwell Blackwood’s private fortress—a black-site sanctuary built after his wife’s tragic "accident" four years ago.
As Marcus brought out fresh clothes, warm blankets, and hot soup for the kids, Maxwell stood before a glass wall covered in tactical maps and facial recognition profiles.
A tall woman in a dark tactical suit walked up behind him. "Boss, we ran the facial scan on the man from the video call. His name is Victor Vance—no relation to the detective, though they operate in the same ring. He’s the head of security for 'Aegis Global,' a private military contractor."
"Aegis Global?" Maxwell frowned. "That's a subsidiary of Vance Holdings."
"Exactly," the woman replied, tapping a tablet. "And guess who the majority shareholder of Vance Holdings is?"
She pulled up a corporate chart. At the top of the tree was a face that made Maxwell’s blood run cold.
It was Eleanor Vance—his late wife’s mother. Ethan’s grandmother.
Maxwell felt as if the room had suddenly run out of oxygen. "Eleanor... my mother-in-law? She’s running the human trafficking ring at Sunshine Manor?"
"It gets worse, Mr. Blackwood," the woman said softly. "We decrypted the dark-web ledger tied to the bank transfer in Queens. Lily Tucker isn't just an orphan who happened to be at that group home."
She pulled up an old birth certificate from eight years ago, along with a DNA match report from a national database.
"Lily’s mother was Sarah Vance... your wife's younger sister who disappeared eight years ago," the woman revealed. "Lily isn't a random girl, Maxwell. She’s Ethan’s first cousin. And Eleanor Vance didn't just want to sell her... she’s trying to erase Sarah’s entire bloodline so Ethan remains the sole heir to the Vance family fortune!"
Maxwell turned around slowly, his eyes fixing on Lily, who was sitting on a couch across the room, carefully feeding Ethan a spoonful of warm broth.
The entire plot was suddenly clear. It wasn't just a random act of cruelty. It was a massive, lethal conspiracy involving money, murder, and treason within his own extended family.
"They used Ethan to lure Lily," Maxwell whispered, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned bone white. "And now they think they have me backed into a corner."
He turned back to his security chief. "Load the heavy weapons. We aren't trading Lily at Warehouse 42."

"What are we doing, sir?"
Maxwell’s face darkened into a smile of pure vengeance. "We’re going to war."
