Chapter 10 - The Empire and the QueenDamian moved with terrifying, blinding speed.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, Damian lunged across the room, slamming his heavy combat boot into Marcus’s wrist. The pistol flew out of Marcus’s hand, clattering across the hardwood floor.

With a roar of pure, unadulterated fury, Damian grabbed Marcus by the collar of his suit jacket and slammed him against the stone fireplace mantel with enough force to crack the stonework.

“You touched my son,” Damian whispered. His voice wasn't loud. It was a cold, lethal hiss that promised eternity in hell. “You stepped foot in his sanctuary. You pointed a weapon at the woman who brought his voice back.”

“Boss—wait—!” Marcus choked out, blood pouring from his nose.

“There is no waiting,” Damian said.

With one fluid motion, Damian drew a heavy hunting knife from his belt and brought it down with absolute, merciless finality.

Within seconds, Marcus’s betrayal was ended, and his men were being dragged out of the mansion by the loyal guard detail that had finally broken through the basement service gates.

The playroom fell silent once more, save for the howling wind outside and the heavy, ragged breathing of the men in the room.

Damian dropped the knife onto the rug, turning around slowly. His storm-gray eyes were wild, dilated, searching frantically across the room until they locked onto his son.

Noah was still kneeling on the floor in front of me, his chest heaving, clutching Captain Buttons in one hand while his other hand instinctively reached out to hold onto the hem of my sweater.

Damian dropped to his knees. He crawled across the hardwood floor, closing the distance between them in seconds, and pulled Noah into his arms with a desperate, sobbing gasp.

“Noah,” Damian choked out, his deep voice cracking for the first time in eight years. “My boy... my baby boy...”

Noah didn't pull away. He buried his face against his father’s broad shoulder, his small arms wrapping around Damian’s neck for the first time since his mother died.

And then, looking past his father’s shoulder, Noah turned his wide, grey eyes toward me.

He didn't speak another word, but he reached out one small hand, taking my fingers and pressing them gently against his teddy bear’s paw, pulling me into their embrace.

Damian raised his head, looking up at me through a shimmering veil of unshed tears. The terrifying underworld king was completely dismantled, reduced to a man who had been given his entire universe back.

He reached out his free hand, capturing my fingers, and pressed a long, reverent kiss against my knuckles.

“You kept your promise, Clara,” he whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. “Now it’s time for me to keep mine.”

Epilogue: Three Months LaterThe wedding was the biggest event Chicago had seen in a century.

Held in a private cliffside estate overlooking Lake Michigan, the guest list included federal judges, powerful politicians, and underworld bosses who bowed their heads in respectful silence as the new queen of the Mercer empire walked down the aisle.

I wore a simple, elegant ivory dress. In my bouquet, tucked neatly among the white roses, was a small pink-and-purple plastic bracelet.

And standing at the altar, holding his father’s hand in a sharp miniature tuxedo with a battered brown teddy bear tucked securely under his arm, was a five-year-old boy who smiled as he watched us approach.

As Damian slid a diamond band onto my finger and pulled me close for our first kiss as husband and wife, I knew two things for certain:

May you like

The dangerous world of Chicago’s underworld had nearly finished destroying me in the past.

But love—silent, fierce, and unbreakable—had just built us a brand-new kingdom.
