CHAPTER 3 — The Video Hidden for Seven Years

Andrés stared at the unknown message on his phone.
Stop asking questions if you love your daughter.
For several seconds, the emergency room disappeared around him.
The voices of nurses.
The sound of footsteps.
The ringing phones.
Everything faded.
Because whoever sent that message wasn't trying to scare him.
They were trying to silence him.
And that meant one thing.
They were afraid.
"Mr. Andrés?"
He looked up.
The hospital social worker, Mariana, stood beside him holding a small notebook.
"Your daughter is resting now."
He immediately turned toward the room.
"Can I see her?"
Mariana nodded.
"But before you go in..."
She lowered her voice.
"There is something you need to understand."
Andrés looked at her.
"What?"
"Sofía is protecting someone."
His eyebrows tightened.
"What do you mean?"
"During the interview, she kept changing her answers."
"At first, she said Aunt Rebeca hurt her."
"Then she became afraid and said she wasn't sure."
Andrés felt his chest tighten.
"She's five years old."
"I know."
Mariana looked toward the hospital room.
"But children sometimes protect people they love."
"Even people who hurt them."
Those words followed him as he walked inside.
Sofía was lying beneath a thin hospital blanket.
Her eyes opened when she saw him.
"Daddy?"
"I'm here, sweetheart."
He sat beside her.
She immediately reached for his hand.
"Are you mad?"
The question surprised him.
"Mad at who?"
She looked away.
"At everyone."
Andrés swallowed.
"No."
"Never at you."
She was quiet for a long time.
Then she whispered:
"Mommy used to say secrets make your heart heavy."
Andrés froze.
"What secret, Sofi?"
The little girl squeezed his finger.
"The secret Aunt Rebeca told Grandma."
His heart began racing.
"What secret?"
But Sofía suddenly became frightened.
She pulled the blanket closer.
"I can't say."
"Why?"
"Because Aunt Rebeca said Daddy would leave me too."
The room became silent.
Andrés felt like someone had punched him.
"Sweetheart..."
"Your daddy will never leave you."
"But Mommy left."
His eyes filled with tears.
"No, Sofi."
"Mommy didn't leave because she wanted to."
"She loved you."
The little girl looked at him.
"Then why did Aunt Rebeca say Mommy was happy to be gone?"
Andrés stood up.
Not because he wanted to.
Because if he stayed seated...
He might break.
At 2:15 a.m., Andrés returned to his childhood home.
Not to apologize.
Not to negotiate.
To find answers.
The lights were still on.
His mother opened the door before he knocked.
As if she had been waiting.
"Andrés..."
Her voice was soft.
Almost rehearsed.
"You don't understand what happened."
He looked at her.
"No."
"I don't."
"But I'm going to."
Behind her, his father sat silently in the living room.
And then Andrés noticed something.
A framed photograph on the shelf.
A family picture from seven years earlier.
Everyone was smiling.
Elena was holding baby Sofía.
Rebeca was standing beside her.
And behind them...
A teenage boy.
Someone Andrés barely remembered.
"Who is that?"
His mother's expression changed.
"What?"
"The boy in the picture."
She quickly moved in front of the frame.
"No one important."
Andrés stared at her.
"Why are you hiding it?"
"I'm not."
"You're lying."
The room became uncomfortable.
Because everyone knew Andrés had stopped believing their lies.
Then his father's phone rang.
Don Julián looked at the screen.
And suddenly turned pale.
"Who is it?"
No answer.
The phone continued vibrating.
Andrés slowly walked closer.
"Let me see."
His father stepped back.
That movement told Andrés everything.
"You know something."
"No."
"You know exactly what happened."
His father looked exhausted.
"Some things should stay buried."
Andrés laughed bitterly.
"My daughter was hurt."
"My dead wife's name was used to hurt her."
"And you want me to bury it?"
Nobody answered.
Then the front door opened.
Rebeca walked inside.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't angry.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
"You really came here to destroy your own family?"
Andrés turned toward her.
"No."
"I came here because someone in this family forgot that Sofía is a child."
Rebeca smiled coldly.
"You think you're a hero now?"
"No."
"I'm her father."
The smile disappeared.
For the first time...
She looked afraid.
"You have no idea what you're uncovering."
Andrés stepped closer.
"Then tell me."
Silence.
"Tell me what happened seven years ago."
Rebeca froze.
His mother looked at her.
His father lowered his eyes.
Andrés noticed.
They all knew that number.
Seven years.
Exactly seven years.
Rebeca finally whispered:
"Elena wasn't supposed to find out."
Andrés felt his entire body go cold.
"Find out what?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Rebeca looked toward the old family photo.
"Your wife discovered the truth about Sofía's birth."
The world stopped.
"What did you say?"
His mother's face turned white.
"Rebeca, stop."
But it was too late.
Andrés grabbed the edge of the table.
"My daughter's birth?"
Rebeca looked at him.
"You really thought Elena died because of a simple medical complication?"
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Because in that moment...
Andrés realized the secret wasn't about a birthday party.
It wasn't about cupcakes.
It wasn't even about the slap.
Someone had spent seven years protecting a truth.
A truth connected to his daughter's identity.
And Elena's death.
When Andrés returned to the hospital before sunrise, he found something strange.
Sofía was awake.
Beside her pillow was a small envelope.
"Daddy..."
"Someone left this for you."
His heart stopped.
"Who?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
With trembling hands, Andrés opened it.
Inside was an old USB drive.
And a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
"If you want to know why Elena really died, watch this before they erase the evidence."
Andrés looked through the hospital window.
The sun was beginning to rise.
But for him...
May you like
The darkest part of the story had just begun.
