CHAPTER 5 — The Woman Who Knew Elena’s Last Secret

The phone call lasted only forty-three seconds.

But those forty-three seconds changed Andrés' entire life.

He stood frozen in the hospital hallway, staring at the words on the screen.

Call ended.

Unknown number.

Camila Vargas.

The woman everyone said was a liar.

The woman his family had spent years convincing him was dangerous.

The woman who apparently knew the truth about Elena's death.

And now...

She was the only person willing to talk.

Andrés looked back through the glass window.

Sofía was sitting on the hospital bed, quietly coloring.

She looked so small.

So innocent.

Yet somehow, the adults around her had created a world full of secrets, fear, and lies.

He walked back into the room.

"Daddy?"

He forced a smile.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we going home?"

The question broke him.

Because home didn't feel like home anymore.

Not after everything he had learned.

Not after discovering the people he trusted most might have been hiding the truth.

"Not yet, princesa."

"Why?"

He sat beside her.

"Because Daddy needs to fix something."

Sofía tilted her head.

"Like Mommy used to fix things?"

Andrés smiled sadly.

"Exactly like Mommy."

Twenty minutes later, his phone rang again.

This time, he answered immediately.

"Camila?"

A few seconds of silence.

Then a woman's trembling voice responded.

"You shouldn't have opened Elena's files."

Andrés tightened his grip on the phone.

"Why?"

"Because now they know you know."

A cold feeling traveled through his body.

"Who?"

Another silence.

Then:

"Your family."

"Tell me everything."

Camila breathed heavily.

"I don't have much time."

"Seven years ago, when Elena gave birth to Sofía, there was another woman at the hospital."

"Me."

Andrés closed his eyes.

"The document."

"Yes."

"The one you found."

"My medical record."

He looked toward the laptop.

"What does it have to do with my daughter?"

Camila's voice cracked.

"Everything."

Seven years earlier...

Camila had been twenty-two years old.

Young.

Scared.

And completely alone.

She had arrived at the hospital in the middle of the night.

She was pregnant.

She had no family nearby.

No money.

No one to help her.

Then Rebeca appeared.

At first...

She seemed like an angel.

She brought food.

She helped with paperwork.

She promised Camila she wasn't alone.

But angels don't ask desperate people to sign documents they don't understand.

And angels don't disappear after taking what they want.

"Rebeca told me she could help me," Camila explained.

"She said she knew people at the hospital."

"She said she could make sure my baby had a better future."

Andrés' hands went cold.

"What happened?"

Camila became quiet.

"My baby was born the same night as Sofía."

The room seemed to stop moving.

"And then?"

"Then something went wrong."

"What do you mean?"

"Your sister discovered that my daughter had a rare medical condition."

Andrés listened carefully.

"She told me my baby wouldn't survive."

"But she lied."

A tear fell from Camila's voice.

"My daughter was alive."

Andrés stood up.

"No..."

Camila continued.

"Rebeca wanted something."

"What?"

"She wanted control."

"She wanted to be the person who saved your family."

"She wanted everyone to owe her."

His mind flashed back.

Everyone praising Rebeca.

Everyone saying:

"She sacrificed everything."

"She helped Elena."

"She was the reason everything worked out."

The perfect sister.

The perfect aunt.

The perfect daughter.

A perfect image built on something rotten.

"But why would she hurt Elena?"

Camila was silent for several seconds.

Then she answered:

"Because Elena found out."

Andrés felt his chest tighten.

"What did Elena find out?"

"She discovered that the documents were changed."

"She discovered that Rebeca had been lying."

"And she was going to expose her."

The hallway suddenly felt freezing.

"Then why did Elena die?"

Camila whispered:

"Because Rebeca knew Elena was going to tell you."

Andrés closed his eyes.

The woman he loved.

The mother of his child.

The person who always believed in honesty.

She hadn't just been fighting a medical problem.

She had been fighting a secret.

A secret nobody wanted him to know.

"Camila..."

"Where are you?"

"I can meet you."

"No."

Her answer was immediate.

"Why?"

"Because if they find out I'm helping you, they'll come after me."

Andrés looked around.

"Who is 'they'?"

Camila whispered:

"Your mother."

His heart stopped.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"Doña Carmen knew everything."

"No."

"She helped cover it up."

Before Andrés could respond, another voice came from behind him.

A familiar voice.

"Is that what she told you?"

He turned.

His mother stood at the end of the hospital hallway.

Doña Carmen.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were full of fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Mom..."

She slowly walked closer.

"You don't understand."

Andrés stared at her.

"Then explain."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time in his life...

His mother had no excuse.

"I wanted to protect you."

Andrés laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?"

"You let me believe Elena died because of bad luck."

"You let me raise my daughter surrounded by people who hurt her."

"I protected this family."

"No."

His voice broke.

"You protected the people who destroyed it."

Doña Carmen started crying.

Andrés had never seen his mother cry before.

Not even at Elena's funeral.

"There is something else you need to know."

He looked at her.

"What?"

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out an old envelope.

Yellowed.

Damaged.

Hidden for years.

"I found this after Elena died."

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

Her tears fell.

"Because Rebeca threatened me."

Andrés opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Elena's handwriting.

The first line made his blood run cold.

"Andrés, if you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid."

He continued reading.

"The person you trust the most is the person you should fear."

His hands began shaking.

Then he reached the final sentence.

The sentence Elena had written before her death.

"Sofía is not the only child whose life was changed by Rebeca's secret."

Andrés looked up.

Confused.

Terrified.

Because now he understood.

The truth was much bigger than he imagined.

It wasn't just about his daughter.

It wasn't just about Elena.

There was another child.

Another secret.

And somewhere...

May you like

Someone had spent seven years making sure nobody ever found out.
