Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Cup

Amanda’s eyes narrowed into slit-like embers of cold fury, though her mouth remained pulled into a strained smile.

"Marcus, honey, you’re tired from driving," she said smoothly, sliding her hand onto my chest in a practiced gesture of comfort. "You don't know what’s been going on here while you were away. Ethan’s been extremely behavioral. We're just trying to teach him responsibility."

"Is that what you call it?" I asked, staring directly into her eyes. "Responsibility?"

Sheila stepped forward, adjusting her gold bracelets. "Now listen here, Marcus. You can't come home and start undermining Amanda’s discipline. We’ve been taking care of this house while you were out earning a paycheck."

"Right," I said. "Taking care of the house."

I didn't press further. I knew that if I pushed too hard, too fast, they would scatter or hide their tracks. I needed them to feel completely safe—safe enough to make their final, fatal mistake.

That night, after everyone went to their rooms, I stayed up in the kitchen.

At around 1:30 AM, the hidden camera feed on my phone pinged with a motion alert.

I watched the live stream from my phone screen while sitting in the dark office downstairs.

Amanda was in the kitchen. She opened the top cabinet, reached far into the back behind the spice rack, and pulled out a small glass vial containing a clear, odorless liquid.

She poured three drops into a fresh container of organic almond milk—the specific brand only I used for my morning protein shakes.

She stirred it gently, put the vial back, and walked out with a terrifyingly calm expression.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Thallium or arsenic. It matched the exact toxicological profile of her late second husband, whose medical records Mac had uncovered hours earlier. She was accelerating her timeline. Because I had returned unexpectedly, she was afraid I would discover the financial discrepancies, so she was moving up my "sudden heart failure."

I waited five minutes after she returned upstairs. Then I walked into the kitchen with latex gloves.

Using a sterile syringe, I extracted a sample of the poisoned almond milk and sealed it in a toxicological evidence bag. I then emptied the rest down the drain, thoroughly washed the container, and replaced it with fresh, untouched almond milk from a sealed carton I had hidden in my toolbox.

She thought she was feeding me my death sentence.

In reality, she was signing her own arrest warrant.

The next morning, I poured myself a full glass of the fresh almond milk right in front of Amanda as she made breakfast.

She stood at the stove, watching me out of the corner of her eye, waiting for me to drink it.

I raised the glass to my lips, caught her gaze, and smiled.

"To family," I said, taking a long sip.

The look of secret, sadistic triumph on Amanda’s face was the most monstrous thing I had ever witnessed. She thought my countdown had begun.

She had no idea her world was about to collapse in less than twelve hours.
