Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

“The Fire Cleanses... But the Truth Never Burns.”They crawled through the dark, soot-filled pipes for what felt like hours, guided only by the distant, muffled sirens of fire trucks.

Finally, Daniel kicked open a rusted iron grate.

They tumbled out onto the muddy banks of a small creek just outside the high concrete walls of the gated community.

The night sky behind them was painted a violent shade of orange. Patricia’s beautiful, elegant house was completely engulfed in flames, lighting up the prestigious Querétaro neighborhood like a demonic beacon.

Mariana hugged Leo and Inés tightly, sobbing against their wet hair. They were alive. They were together.

But Daniel knew this wasn't over.

Two days later, the news of the "tragic house fire" in the exclusive community dominated the national headlines.

The media reported that Patricia Rivas and her mother, Elena, had perished in the fire, along with several unidentified individuals suspected of being part of a high-profile kidnapping ring. Alvaro Vance had vanished, his mansion abandoned, though police claimed they were "actively searching" for him.

Daniel, Mariana, and the children were safe in a secure, undisclosed location, protected by federal agents who weren't on Vance’s payroll.

It was a rainy afternoon when Daniel sat on the edge of Leo’s bed in their safe house. The boy was finally eating, his cheeks regaining their color.

“Daddy?” Leo whispered, looking up from his drawing book.

“Yes, buddy?”

“Before the fire... when I was in the box...” Leo hesitated, his little hand trembling.

“What is it, Leo? You can tell me anything.”

Leo leaned in close, his eyes wide with a lingering, deep-seated terror.

“The bad man... Mr. Vance... he said they have boxes like mine under every single house in that neighborhood.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

“And he said... there’s a much bigger box under our house in Guadalajara. He said they've been waiting for us to go back home.”

Daniel stared at his son, the horrifying realization washing over him.

The nightmare hadn't ended in Querétaro.

It had started in their own home. And the master key was still out there, waiting for them in the dark.
