Chapter 7 - THE SHOCKING DISCOVERY IN THE BASEMENT ARCHIVESThree weeks after the boardroom takeover, I sat alone in the dim, climate-controlled basement archives of Crestwell Holdings.

The air smelled of old paper, leather bindings, and decades of corporate history. Dust motes danced in the pale shafts of light filtering through the high street-level windows.
My job as the new CEO wasn't just about managing profits; it was about cleansing the rot that had festered under my father’s negligent, ego-driven leadership.
I was going through the company’s legacy financial records from twenty years ago—the era when my grandfather ran the firm before my father took over and nearly bankrupted it.
As I pulled out an old, leather-bound ledger labeled 1998 Acquisitions, a small, yellowed envelope slipped out from between the pages.
It wasn't a financial statement.
It was a handwritten letter addressed to my grandfather, written in a shaky, frantic hand I didn't recognize.
Curious, I broke the brittle wax seal and unfolded the parchment.
“Dear Thomas,” the letter began.
“If you are reading this, it means the worst has happened, and Richard has managed to push me out of the company just like he planned. You need to know the truth about what happened to the original Crestwell estate and why your son is so desperate to control these assets. Arthur Vance—the man Richard brought into your orbit last year—isn't a stranger. He is the son of the partner Richard ruined back in '95. He isn't here to partner with your family; he is here for total, systematic annihilation.”
My breath caught in my throat.
Arthur wasn't just a random con man who had stumbled into our lives?
I read further down the page, my eyes scanning the frantic ink:
“And be careful of Elena. She isn't just an accomplice. She is Richard’s biological—ops, wait—she is Arthur’s legal shield, but worse... she is connected to the very people who engineered the car accident that nearly killed your granddaughter two years ago.”
Before I could process the chilling implication of those words, the motion-activated security light in the hallway flickered off.
Then, it flickered back on.
Footsteps echoed softly on the concrete floor outside the archive room.
Heavy. Deliberate. Slow.

Someone was walking down the basement stairs.
And the security guards were off-duty on this floor tonight.
