CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN WAITING FOR TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS

The ambulance doors slammed shut.
The sirens cut through the night as Renata struggled to stay conscious.
Everything hurt.
Every breath felt like broken glass inside her chest.
Beside her, Emiliano refused to let go of her hand.
"You promised we'd grow old together," he whispered, his voice trembling. "You don't get to break that promise tonight."
Renata tried to answer.
Only a faint whisper escaped.
"Don't... leave me..."
"I won't."
He kissed her forehead.
"Not tonight."
"Not ever."
Behind the ambulance, three police officers were already questioning Octavio Vargas.
"There was an accident," Octavio insisted.
"My daughter slipped."
The oldest officer looked down at the blood-covered brick lying on the lawn.
"You expect me to believe she slipped onto this?"
Patricia quickly stepped forward.
"Our daughter has emotional problems."
"She often hurts herself."
One officer slowly raised an eyebrow.
"Hurts herself... with a construction brick?"
Neither parent answered.
Before another question could be asked, a calm voice interrupted them.
"That's enough."
Everyone turned.
The elderly man from the second-floor window slowly crossed the street with the help of his wooden cane.
Every step seemed deliberate.
Every movement carried unusual confidence.
He stopped only a few feet away from Octavio.
For several long seconds...
Neither man spoke.
Then the old man smiled.
"I've waited twenty-seven years to see this night."
Octavio's face instantly lost all color.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Patricia grabbed her husband's arm.
"You know him?"
Octavio didn't answer.
Instead...
He took one terrified step backward.
The officers noticed immediately.
"You recognize this gentleman?"
The old man removed a faded leather folder from beneath his arm.
Its corners were worn.
Its pages had yellowed with age.
But the string holding it together had been tied carefully, as if it contained something priceless.
"My name," he said quietly, "is Arturo Salazar."
The name hit Octavio like another brick.
His breathing became uneven.
His hands began shaking.
Patricia looked confused.
"Who's Arturo?"
Octavio still couldn't speak.
Arturo slowly opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of handwritten letters.
Old photographs.
Cassette tapes.
Bank receipts.
Medical reports.
Property records.
Every document had been carefully organized.
"I've spent twenty-seven years collecting these."
"And tonight..."
"They finally matter."
Across town...
Doctors rushed Renata into emergency surgery.
Dr. Elena Morales studied the CT scans.
"Orbital fracture."
"Cheekbone shattered."
"Several facial bones broken."
A young nurse swallowed hard.
"Will she lose her eye?"
The surgeon didn't answer immediately.
Finally she sighed.
"I don't know."
Outside the operating room...
Emiliano sat alone.
His white shirt was stained with Renata's blood.
His phone had been destroyed during the attack.
He borrowed another patient's charger just long enough to call his attorney.
"I want attempted murder charges."
"And I want emergency protection for Renata."
The lawyer didn't hesitate.
"I'm already on my way."
Meanwhile...
Back at the Vargas house...
Arturo placed an old black-and-white photograph onto the hood of a police car.
It showed two young men standing beside a small construction company.
One of them was clearly Octavio.
The other...
Was Arturo.
Both were smiling.
Both looked proud.
"What is this?" one officer asked.
Arturo answered without taking his eyes off Octavio.
"The day I made the biggest mistake of my life."
"We were partners."
Silence filled the street.
Patricia stared at her husband.
"You never told me you had a business partner."
"I had one," Arturo replied.
"Until he stole everything."
Octavio suddenly shouted.
"You're lying!"
Arturo calmly reached into the folder again.
This time...
He removed an original partnership agreement.
Every page carried signatures.
Notarized seals.
Official registration stamps.
The officers immediately recognized the authenticity.
Octavio's breathing became heavier.
"You forged those."
Arturo smiled sadly.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
He pulled out another envelope.
Inside was a forensic handwriting report completed only three weeks earlier.
The signatures had already been verified by independent experts.
One officer quietly whistled.
"This changes everything."
Patricia slowly stepped away from her husband.
"What is he talking about?"
Octavio looked desperate.
"Don't listen to him."
"He wants revenge."
Arturo nodded.
"You're right."
"I do."
"But not for the reason you think."
He opened the final section of the folder.
Inside rested a thick cream-colored envelope sealed with dark blue wax.
Across the front were handwritten words.
LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT
The officer carefully looked at the document.
"The estate is worth..."
He stopped reading.
His eyes widened.
"...eleven million dollars."
Patricia gasped.
Julieta grabbed her mother's arm.
"Eleven million?"
Arturo nodded.
"My older brother died three months ago."
"He had no children."
"No wife."
"No surviving parents."
"He left everything..."
Arturo paused intentionally.
"...to the only family member who never betrayed him."
Everyone assumed he meant himself.
Instead...
He slowly turned toward the ambulance disappearing into the distance.
"Renata Vargas."
Julieta's mouth fell open.
Patricia nearly collapsed.
Octavio's face twisted with panic.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Arturo looked directly into his eyes.
"It would have been impossible..."
"If you hadn't hidden one truth for twenty-seven years."
The officers exchanged confused glances.
"What truth?"
Arturo closed the folder.
"The truth that Renata was never the daughter Octavio wanted to destroy."
He looked toward the hospital where Renata was fighting to save her eyesight.
"She is the last legal heir to a fortune that never belonged to Octavio."
"And if she dies before learning the truth..."
Arturo's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Every person responsible for tonight will lose far more than their freedom."
Before anyone could ask another question...
A black luxury SUV suddenly stopped beside the police cars.
Four men wearing expensive suits stepped out.
Each carried the same silver emblem on their lapel.
One of them approached Arturo respectfully.
"Mr. Salazar..."
"The trustees have arrived."
Arturo gave a slow nod.
"It's time."
Then he looked straight at Octavio.
"The inheritance hearing begins tomorrow morning."
"And before the sun sets..."
"The entire city will discover the secret you've been hiding since the day Renata was born."
Octavio's knees nearly gave way.
Because he knew one thing that no one else did.
If Arturo revealed the next document inside that folder...
His marriage...
His reputation...
His fortune...
May you like
And perhaps even his freedom...
Would all disappear in a single day.
