CHAPTER 3 — THE DNA REPORT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The next morning...

Long before sunrise...

The emergency surgery was finally over.

Emiliano had not moved from the waiting room for almost eight hours.

His shirt was still stained with Renata's blood.

His hands trembled every time the operating room doors opened.

Finally, Dr. Elena Morales stepped outside, removing her surgical mask.

"The surgery was successful."

Emiliano stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

"Will she be okay?"

The doctor's expression softened.

"She survived."

"We managed to reconstruct most of the fractures."

"But..."

She hesitated.

"The damage around her left eye was severe."

"It may take months before we know whether her vision will fully return."

Emiliano closed his eyes.

For the first time that night...

He cried.

Not because everything was fine.

But because she was still alive.

Across the city...

Inside a private conference room overlooking downtown León...

Octavio, Patricia, and Julieta sat in complete silence.

None of them had slept.

Julieta slammed both hands onto the table.

"Tell us who that old man really is!"

Octavio poured himself another glass of whiskey.

His hands shook so badly that half of it spilled.

"I thought he was dead."

Patricia stared at him.

"You've said that three times."

"What aren't you telling us?"

Octavio remained silent.

Julieta's patience snapped.

"If Renata inherits eleven million dollars, everything we've planned is finished!"

Octavio suddenly looked at her.

"No."

"That's not what scares me."

"Then what does?"

His answer barely rose above a whisper.

"If Arturo opens the last envelope..."

"You'll discover that everything we've told you about this family is a lie."

At exactly nine o'clock...

The trustees gathered inside the office of attorney Ricardo Benavides.

The conference table was covered with sealed documents.

Property records.

Investment portfolios.

Trust agreements.

And one thick envelope marked:

CONFIDENTIAL — DNA EVIDENCE

Emiliano arrived carrying a folder of medical reports.

Arturo was already waiting.

"So..."

Emiliano said quietly.

"You've known Renata her entire life?"

Arturo nodded.

"Since the day she was born."

"Why didn't you tell her?"

Arturo looked toward the window.

"Because I promised someone."

"And I never break my promises."

At the hospital...

Renata slowly opened her remaining good eye.

The room was quiet.

Machines beeped softly beside her bed.

Everything felt heavy.

She tried to remember.

The brick.

Her father's face.

Julieta smiling.

Then...

A voice.

"Don't move too quickly."

She turned slightly.

An elderly nurse smiled kindly.

"Your fiancé hasn't left this floor once."

Renata whispered one question.

"My parents..."

The nurse hesitated.

"They haven't come."

Renata smiled bitterly.

"I didn't think they would."

Back inside the attorney's office...

Arturo finally untied the blue ribbon around the confidential envelope.

Everyone leaned forward.

He removed two DNA reports.

Both were dated twenty-seven years earlier.

One original.

One newly confirmed.

Attorney Benavides adjusted his glasses.

"I've verified these independently."

"They're authentic."

Octavio suddenly burst through the office doors.

"Stop!"

Security guards immediately blocked him.

"You have no authority to interrupt these proceedings."

"I demand those documents!"

Arturo looked almost disappointed.

"You still don't understand."

"This stopped being your decision decades ago."

He handed the first report to Emiliano.

Emiliano read the first line.

Then froze.

His breathing stopped.

"This..."

"This can't be."

Patricia rushed inside moments later.

"What does it say?"

Nobody answered.

Julieta grabbed the papers from Emiliano's trembling hands.

Her face instantly turned white.

"No..."

"No!"

She stumbled backward until she hit the wall.

The report clearly stated:

Biological Father: Negative.

Octavio Vargas is NOT the biological father of Renata Vargas.

Silence consumed the room.

Patricia looked as though the world had collapsed beneath her feet.

Octavio closed his eyes.

He already knew.

He had known for twenty-seven years.

The second report shocked everyone even more.

Attorney Benavides spoke carefully.

"The second analysis identifies the biological father."

Every eye fixed on Arturo.

Slowly...

He removed one faded photograph from the folder.

It showed a young couple standing outside a small hospital.

The woman was Patricia.

Beside her stood a smiling young man.

Not Octavio.

Arturo placed the photograph beside the DNA report.

"The man in this picture..."

"...was my younger brother."

The room erupted.

Patricia burst into tears.

Julieta screamed.

"You're lying!"

Arturo calmly shook his head.

"My brother, Gabriel Salazar, loved Patricia before she married Octavio."

"When Gabriel died in what everyone believed was a construction accident..."

"Octavio saw an opportunity."

"He married Patricia."

"He raised Gabriel's daughter."

"But not because he loved her."

He looked toward the hospital.

"He raised her because he believed controlling Gabriel's child meant controlling Gabriel's fortune."

Emiliano slowly looked up.

"So Renata..."

Arturo nodded.

"...has never belonged to the Vargas family."

"She is the last surviving heir of the Salazar estate."

Octavio finally spoke.

His voice was empty.

"I never wanted to hurt her."

Arturo stared at him in disbelief.

"You hit her in the face with a brick."

"You spent twenty-seven years stealing her inheritance."

"You convinced her she was unwanted."

"You let your other daughter believe she deserved everything."

"And today..."

"You almost killed the only innocent person in this family."

No one defended him.

Not even Patricia.

Then the attorney opened one final envelope.

"I believe everyone should hear this."

Inside was a cassette tape that had recently been digitized.

The recording crackled with age.

Then a man's voice filled the room.

It was Gabriel Salazar.

Weak.

Breathing heavily.

"If anything happens to me..."

"I want my daughter..."

"...Renata..."

"...to inherit everything."

"I know Octavio will try to take it."

"If you're hearing this..."

"It means he finally did."

The room fell completely silent.

Even Octavio began crying.

But no one believed his tears anymore.

Miles away...

Renata lay awake in her hospital room.

She had no idea that, at that exact moment, her entire identity had changed forever.

She still believed the people who destroyed her life were her real family.

She didn't know that before sunset...

She would discover she had inherited millions...

A new surname...

And a truth so devastating that it would make her question every memory of her childhood.

But an even greater danger was already approaching.

Outside the hospital...

A black sedan quietly parked across the street.

A man stepped out wearing dark sunglasses despite the cloudy sky.

He spoke into a phone.

"She's alive."

A pause.

Then he smiled coldly.

"Finish what Octavio couldn't."

Inside his jacket...

May you like

He slowly loaded a suppressed pistol.

And walked toward the hospital entrance.
