Chapter 10 - RECLAIMED HORIZONSThat evening, the sun set over our home in Virginia, casting a warm, golden glow across the backyard patio where my father was grilling steaks while humming an old tune.

The air smelled of charcoal, woodsmoke, and blooming spring flowers.
I stepped out onto the patio holding two glasses of iced tea, handing one to my father as he flipped a steak with expert precision. He took the glass, smiling warmly, his eyes entirely clear of the shadows that had once haunted them.
"Smells incredible, Chef," I teased, leaning against the railing.
"You know your old man," he laughed, shaking his spatula at me. "I might have been knocked down, but I’m far from out."
"Never doubted it for a second, Dad."
We stood together in comfortable silence, watching the stars begin to emerge in the vast, open evening sky. The nightmare in Marion County was years away in spirit, locked behind thick concrete walls where it belonged. The debt had been paid, the traitors had been broken, and the bond between a father and his daughter had emerged from the fire unbreakable.
I raised my glass in a quiet toast to the horizon.
May you like
He clinked his glass against mine, the crisp clink ringing out into the night air like a promise kept.
We were home. And nothing would ever touch us again.
