CHAPTER 2 — The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

The room went completely silent.
Every pair of eyes turned toward the hospital monitor as the first seconds of the video appeared.
The footage was shaky.
The camera pointed toward the floor, catching only fragments of expensive marble tiles and the edge of a staircase inside the Del Valle mansion.
Renata's frightened breathing echoed through the speakers.
"Mom... if you're watching this..."
Her trembling voice filled the room.
"...it means I couldn't protect myself."
Mariana's heart stopped.
She hadn't even known her daughter had recorded a message.
The image suddenly shifted.
Octavio's polished shoes entered the frame.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"You've become a problem, Renata."
The teenager backed away.
"Dad... please..."
"You embarrassed me in front of investors."
"I only told them the truth," Renata whispered.
"You hit Mom."
For a split second, nobody in the hospital moved.
Then the sound came.
A violent slap.
The camera spun wildly as Renata crashed against the wall.
Several nurses instinctively gasped.
One covered her mouth.
Another quietly wiped away tears.
Mariana felt every muscle in her body tighten.
She wanted to look away.
She couldn't.
The recording continued.
Beatriz entered the room carrying a leather belt.
Instead of stopping her son...
She handed it to him.
"If you don't teach her respect now," she said coldly, "she'll destroy this family."
Octavio wrapped the belt around his hand.
"You forced this."
The next few seconds showed only blurred movement.
Cries.
Heavy breathing.
Furniture crashing onto the floor.
Then darkness.
Someone had thrown the pendant beneath a cabinet.
The picture disappeared...
But the audio never stopped.
Renata screamed.
Then came Octavio's voice.
"No bruises on the face."
"We can't let people ask questions."
Mariana felt sick.
Dr. Robles immediately reached for his phone.
"I'm calling the police."
Octavio lunged toward the monitor.
"Turn that off!"
Two hospital security officers stepped directly into his path.
"This is private family business," Octavio snapped.
"It stopped being private the moment a child was tortured," Dr. Robles replied.
For the first time in his career, the famous philanthropist looked genuinely afraid.
His expensive confidence disappeared.
Beatriz suddenly collapsed into a chair.
"This isn't what it looks like."
Mariana slowly turned toward her.
"What does it look like?"
Neither of them answered.
Within minutes, police officers arrived at the emergency department.
Detective Sofía Navarro entered carrying a tablet.
She had investigated crimes against children for almost fifteen years.
As she watched the recording, her expression hardened.
She looked directly at Octavio.
"You are under investigation for aggravated child abuse."
Octavio laughed.
"A video proves nothing."
"It can be edited."
"It can be manipulated."
"I have the best attorneys in the country."
Mariana remained silent.
She expected him to say exactly that.
Then Detective Navarro asked the question nobody expected.
"Where is the original recording device?"
Mariana gently removed the silver pendant from Renata's neck.
"It never stopped recording."
The detective carefully sealed it inside an evidence bag.
Octavio's face lost its color.
That pendant contained every second.
Every word.
Every threat.
Every lie.
For the first time in years, he realized he had made one fatal mistake.
He had underestimated both his wife...
...and his daughter.
As officers escorted Octavio toward the hallway, he suddenly stopped.
He smiled.
Not the smile of a defeated man.
The smile of someone who still held one final card.
"You really think you've won?"
He looked directly at Mariana.
"The recording isn't the only secret in this family."
Mariana frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Octavio leaned closer.
"So you never told her?"
Mariana's blood ran cold.
"Told me what?" Renata whispered weakly from the hospital bed.
Octavio laughed quietly.
"The truth about who her real father is."
The room exploded into stunned silence.
Mariana's face turned completely white.
May you like
And for the first time since the nightmare began...
She couldn't answer.
