CHAPTER 3 — The Lie That Lasted Sixteen Years

No one spoke.

The silence inside the emergency room became almost unbearable.

Renata stared at her mother.

"What... does he mean?"

Mariana's lips parted, but no words came out.

For sixteen years she had prepared herself for many nightmares.

This one had never been one of them.

Octavio smiled despite the police officers gripping his arms.

"There it is."

"The famous prosecutor... suddenly speechless."

Detective Sofía Navarro stepped between them.

"Enough."

Octavio ignored her.

"Go ahead, Mariana."

"Tell our daughter why you never wanted a DNA test."

Renata's breathing became uneven.

She looked from her father...

...to her mother.

"Mom..."

"Please."

"Tell me he's lying."

Tears gathered in Mariana's eyes.

She slowly sat beside the hospital bed and gently held Renata's trembling hands.

"I never lied to protect myself."

"I lied because I was trying to protect you."

Renata looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Mariana closed her eyes.

Sixteen years earlier...

She had been one of the youngest prosecutors in Mexico City, investigating a criminal network that trafficked missing children across several states.

One witness had agreed to testify.

But the night before the hearing...

He disappeared.

So did every piece of evidence.

Only one person had warned Mariana to stop asking questions.

Octavio Del Valle.

Back then, he had been a charming young businessman who claimed he wanted to help expose corruption.

Instead...

He convinced her that the people she was investigating were too dangerous.

Then, only weeks later...

She discovered she was pregnant.

Octavio insisted they get married immediately.

He promised he would protect both her and the baby.

For years, Mariana believed him.

Until she slowly realized that marriage had never been about love.

It had been about control.

Back in the hospital room, Renata whispered,

"So..."

"...is he my father?"

Mariana looked directly into her daughter's eyes.

"Yes."

"As far as I have ever known..."

"Octavio is your biological father."

Relief briefly crossed Renata's face.

But Octavio burst into laughter.

"You still believe that?"

He slowly looked toward Detective Navarro.

"You should reopen the Alcázar case from sixteen years ago."

"You'll find something interesting."

Mariana's heartbeat quickened.

"What case?"

"The witness who disappeared."

"The one everyone assumed had been murdered."

Octavio's smile widened.

"He didn't disappear."

"He ran away..."

"...with your greatest secret."

The detective frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Octavio answered calmly.

"The hospital where Renata was born."

Mariana suddenly felt dizzy.

The memories came rushing back.

The power outage.

The emergency generators failing.

The nurses changing shifts.

The confusion in the maternity ward.

She had always remembered one strange detail.

For nearly twenty minutes...

Nobody had known where her newborn daughter was.

The hospital had blamed a paperwork error.

She had accepted the explanation.

Until now.

Octavio leaned closer.

"Maybe the girl lying in that bed..."

"...isn't even your biological daughter."

The words struck Mariana like lightning.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That's impossible."

Detective Navarro immediately turned to one of the officers.

"Seal every birth record from San Gabriel Hospital dating back sixteen years."

"Contact the national forensic laboratory."

"I want maternity and paternity DNA testing immediately."

The officer nodded and hurried out.

Beatriz, who had remained silent until now, suddenly stood up.

Her face had lost every trace of confidence.

"Octavio..."

"What have you done?"

He looked at his own mother with cold amusement.

"You always wanted the truth buried."

"Looks like it's finally coming out."

Mariana watched Beatriz carefully.

She wasn't shocked by Octavio's accusation.

She looked terrified.

As if she already knew exactly what he was talking about.

Before anyone could ask another question, Beatriz whispered three words that froze everyone in the room.

"It wasn't planned..."

Octavio stared at her.

"What did you say?"

She covered her mouth too late.

Detective Navarro stepped forward immediately.

"Mrs. Del Valle..."

"What exactly wasn't planned?"

Beatriz's eyes filled with panic.

She slowly backed toward the hospital door.

Then she turned...

...and ran.

At that exact second, Detective Navarro shouted,

"Stop her!"

But Beatriz wasn't running toward the exit.

She was running toward the hospital archives.

Toward the one place that still contained records from sixteen years ago.

And hidden inside those files...

...was a secret someone had been willing to kill to protect.
