Chapter 1 - The Empty Threat

My phone buzzed again on the hotel nightstand.

“I’m calling your father, Karen. Let’s see how proud he is of his selfish, arrogant daughter when he finds out you’re starving your husband.”

I stared at the screen, the blue light reflecting in the dark room. For ten years, the threat of my parents’ disappointment had been his ultimate leash. Landon knew I came from a traditional family. He knew my father valued marriage above almost everything.

What Landon didn’t know was that three days ago, I had driven to my parents’ house in Connecticut. I had sat at their oak dining table, placed my bank statements and the private investigator's photos in front of my father, and watched the color drain from his face.

My father didn't value marriage more than he valued his daughter’s life.

I typed back: “Go ahead. Call him.”

I turned off my phone, slid into the cold hotel sheets, and slept for the first time in months.

The next morning, I walked into the Boston boardroom feeling lighter than air. The negotiation was brutal, a grueling four-hour chess match over a multi-million-dollar logistics contract. But I was sharp. I was ruthless. The men across the table, who had previously tried to talk over me, eventually fell silent, nodding to my terms.

When I walked out of that building at 1:00 PM, I had secured the biggest deal of my firm’s decade. My promotion to Vice President was guaranteed.

I turned my phone back on. There were fourteen missed calls from Landon. And one voicemail from my father.

I played my dad's message as I hailed a cab to the airport.

“Karen, sweetheart,” my father’s voice rumbled, thick with barely restrained fury. “That parasite called me at midnight. Told me you were financially abusing him. I let him talk for ten minutes. Then I told him that if he ever spoke your name again, I would personally drive to Queens and show him what a real man looks like. Finish your meeting, honey. We’ve got your back.”

I smiled. The trap was set. But I wasn't just going to lock him out. I was going to burn his illusion to the ground.
