Chapter 4 - THE NEST OF LIES

FB Hook: "The cop who came to save me wasn't a cop at all... and what he pulled out of his pocket left me frozen in horror!"My breath hitched in my throat. The air left my lungs in a sharp gasp.

"You..." I whispered, backing away until my spine hit the cold metal table. "It's you."

The man dressed in the police officer's uniform let out a low, amused hum. He casually turned around and locked the interrogation room door from the inside, dropping the heavy deadbolt into place.

"I have to admit, Julia," he said, his voice dropping the high-pitched rookie officer act and shifting back into the smooth, chilling tone of my husband. "Stealing a patrol car from the precinct garage was surprisingly easy. People in uniform rarely get questioned. They just assume you belong."

"Ethan, wake up!" I screamed, turning around to grab my sleeping son.

Ethan startled awake, rubbing his eyes, confused and frightened by my frantic tone. "Mommy? What's happening?"

"Stay behind me!" I yelled, pulling Ethan onto the table behind me and grabbing the heavy metal chair next to the desk, lifting it up like a shield. "Get away from us! Don't touch him!"

"Ben"—or whatever his real name was—didn't draw a gun. Instead, he pulled a small black remote control from his police belt and pressed a button.

Outside in the hallway, a loud, piercing fire alarm began to blare. BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! The red strobe lights in the ceiling began to flash violently, casting blood-red light across the small room.

"The whole building is evacuating right now," he said calmly, stepping toward me. "Standard protocol for a Class-3 chemical pull alarm in the basement. Officers are rushing to clear the public out of the lobby. Nobody is paying attention to this corridor."

"Why are you doing this?!" I sobbed, holding the metal chair out in front of me, my arms shaking with exhaustion and horror. "Who are you?! What did you do to the real Ben?!"

He paused, looking at me with a strange, almost wistful sadness in his dark eyes.

"I am Ben, Julia," he said softly. "I've been Ben for seven years. I lived his life better than he ever did. He was a worthless, abusive addict who beat his mother and squandered every dime his father left him. When he died in that ditch seven years ago, Helen was penniless, broke, and ready to die."

"So you locked her in a basement?!" I screamed over the blaring fire alarm.

"I saved her!" he roared, his mask slipping for a brief second, his eyes flashing with wild, manic intensity. "She didn't want to go to a state asylum! She was terrified of the debt! I stepped in. I took his name. I took his life. I paid off her debts! I gave her a home! I built a life out of absolute garbage!"

He took another step closer, holding his hands out in a placating gesture. "And then I found you, Julia. You and Ethan. You gave me a real family. A clean slate. I loved you! I still love you!"

"You're insane!" I screamed. "You kept a woman captive for seven years so you could play house with me!"

"She was safe down there!" he yelled back, his voice competing with the shrieking alarm. "She had everything she needed! If she went outside, if anyone saw her, the state would have investigated! They would have realized Ben was dead, they would have seized the house, they would have taken everything! I kept her hidden to protect our life!"

"Where is she now?" I demanded, tears streaming down my face. "What did you do to Helen?!"

He hesitated. A cold, dark shadow crossed his face.

"She's somewhere she can't ruin things anymore," he murmured softly.

He lunged forward.

He grabbed the metal chair out of my hands with terrifying strength, ripping it away and slamming it against the wall. I screamed, shoving Ethan behind me and swinging my purse at his face. The heavy metal buckle caught him across his cheek, cutting the skin.

He grunted, stumbling back, wiping a trickle of blood from his jaw.

"I didn't want to hurt you, Julia," he whispered, his eyes going entirely dead. "But you're making this very difficult."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small glass vial and a syringe.

Before he could step toward us again, the heavy wooden door of the interrogation room exploded inward with a deafening CRASH.

The door frame shattered. Detective Vance stood in the doorway, his service weapon drawn and aimed directly at the imposter's chest.

"DROP THE SYRINGE!" Vance roared. "DROP IT OR I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL TAKE YOU DOWN RIGHT HERE!"

The imposter froze. He looked at Vance, then looked at me, a bitter, tragic smile spreading across his face.

"You were too late, Detective," the imposter whispered.

And with horrifying speed, before Vance could react, the imposter jammed the syringe directly into his own neck and plunged the liquid home.
