CHAPTER 2 — "The $300,000 Bill Arrived… And the Entire Mansion Went Silent When the Truth Walked Through the Front Door."

The music started again.

Only this time...

It sounded forced.

The norteño band kept playing because they had already been paid their deposit.

Guests laughed a little louder than before, trying to erase the uncomfortable scene they had just witnessed.

Diego raised another glass of expensive tequila.

"See?" he said proudly. "Drama always follows women who don't know their place."

Several men laughed with him.

Doña Amparo smirked.

"I told you she'd leave. Women like Sofía always come crawling back once they realize they have nowhere else to go."

Nobody noticed the three black SUVs rolling slowly through the mansion gates.

The security guards didn't stop them.

They assumed they belonged to another wealthy guest.

The vehicles parked neatly beside the fountain.

Four sharply dressed men stepped out first.

Behind them came a woman in an elegant navy business suit carrying a leather portfolio.

She wasn't smiling.

She wasn't impressed by the mansion.

She walked with the confidence of someone who had every legal right to interrupt the richest party in the city.

Inside...

A waiter leaned toward Diego.

"Sir... there are people asking for you."

Diego barely looked up.

"Tell them I'm entertaining guests."

"They said they represent the catering company."

Diego laughed.

"Fine. Bring them inside."

He wanted everyone to see how important he was.

He imagined they had come to thank him for hiring such an exclusive service.

Instead...

The woman walked directly into the center of the ballroom.

She waited until the band finished the song.

Then she spoke calmly.

"Good evening."

Her voice wasn't loud.

Yet every conversation stopped.

"My name is Laura Medina."

"I am the financial director representing Imperial Elite Catering."

She opened the leather folder.

"We are here regarding Invoice Number 4478."

Diego smiled confidently.

"Oh, yes."

"Excellent food."

"My assistant will handle the payment next week."

Laura didn't move.

"I'm afraid that won't be possible."

"The agreement signed by Mr. Diego Robles requires payment immediately upon completion of the event."

She handed him a thick envelope.

Diego opened it carelessly.

His smile disappeared.

The total was printed in bold black letters.

USD $300,000.

His hand froze.

Someone nearby whispered,

"Three hundred thousand dollars?"

Another guest leaned closer to see.

"That can't be right..."

Laura continued speaking without emotion.

"The amount includes imported ingredients, private chefs, premium service staff, event logistics, luxury beverage packages, custom preparation, and exclusive venue service."

Diego forced himself to laugh.

"There must be some mistake."

"We agreed on much less."

Laura calmly slid another document onto the table.

"There was no mistake."

"This is your signed contract."

Every page carried Diego's unmistakable signature.

The room became strangely quiet.

Diego quickly flipped through the papers.

His heartbeat accelerated.

The signatures were real.

Every single one.

His palms suddenly felt wet.

He remembered signing several documents a week earlier without reading them.

Sofía.

She had handed him the folder.

He had been too busy boasting about the party to care.

Doña Amparo stood.

"My son doesn't owe anyone three hundred thousand dollars."

Laura looked toward her politely.

"Ma'am..."

"The contract is legally enforceable."

"If payment is not completed tonight, collection procedures begin immediately."

Diego laughed again.

This time...

Nobody laughed with him.

"Fine."

"I'll wire the money tomorrow."

Laura shook her head.

"The contract specifically states payment must be completed before midnight tonight."

A businessman sitting near the stage quietly lowered his champagne glass.

He recognized the collection firm standing behind Laura.

They weren't bluffing.

One of Diego's cousins whispered,

"Why would anyone sign something like that?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was wondering the same thing.

Diego reached into his jacket.

He pulled out one platinum credit card.

"Run this."

Laura handed it to one of her assistants.

Portable payment terminal.

Swipe.

Approved...

Processing...

Declined.

Diego frowned.

"Try again."

Declined.

He laughed awkwardly.

"Wrong card."

Second card.

Declined.

Third.

Declined.

Fourth.

Declined.

The ballroom suddenly felt much warmer.

Sweat appeared across Diego's forehead.

Doña Amparo forced a smile.

"He's probably reached today's bank limit."

Laura checked her tablet.

"The transactions were declined because the available credit has been exhausted."

A silence heavier than concrete settled across the room.

One guest quietly put down his wine.

Another slowly stepped away from Diego.

The image of the successful millionaire was beginning to crack.

Diego quickly pulled out his phone.

He called his bank manager.

No answer.

He called his business partner.

Voicemail.

Another lender.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

His breathing became uneven.

Laura checked her watch.

"It is now 8:17 p.m."

"You have three hours and forty-three minutes remaining before legal enforcement begins."

Doña Amparo stepped forward angrily.

"This is harassment!"

Laura smiled politely.

"No."

"This is contract enforcement."

Then she delivered the sentence that changed the atmosphere forever.

"We completed extensive financial verification before accepting this event."

"Our company only accepts contracts from clients who personally guarantee payment."

She held up another document.

"This guarantee was signed by Mr. Diego Robles."

One of the guests quietly asked,

"So... if he doesn't pay..."

Laura answered without hesitation.

"We immediately begin recovery proceedings against all assets legally connected to him."

Diego interrupted loudly.

"I own a mansion worth thirty-five million pesos."

Laura looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"You don't."

The room froze.

Even the band members stopped adjusting their instruments.

Laura opened another folder.

"Our legal department conducted a routine property verification."

"The residence hosting tonight's celebration is registered to Las Lomas Luxury Estates."

"It is leased."

"Six-month rental agreement."

Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

Crash.

Doña Amparo stared at Laura in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

Laura calmly placed certified property records onto the dining table.

"The owner is not Mr. Diego Robles."

"The lease expires in four months."

Every guest leaned closer.

The documents looked official.

Government seals.

Registration numbers.

Legal certifications.

No one questioned their authenticity.

One businessman quietly whispered,

"He rented the house?"

Another answered,

"My God..."

"The entire thing was fake."

Across the room...

The influencers who had spent hours filming luxury content slowly lowered their phones.

Several guests discreetly deleted social media posts they had uploaded only minutes earlier.

The whispers spread like wildfire.

"He doesn't own the mansion."

"Then where did the money come from?"

"What else has he lied about?"

Doña Amparo's face turned pale.

For years she had bragged that her son had become one of Mexico City's rising real estate stars.

Now...

Dozens of wealthy people were discovering the truth together.

Diego felt his legs weaken.

But the worst part hadn't arrived yet.

Laura closed the property file.

Then removed one final envelope.

"I have one additional financial document."

She looked directly at Diego.

"This concerns a personal promissory note."

The room fell completely silent.

Diego's eyes widened.

His heartbeat nearly stopped.

He recognized the envelope immediately.

It was the one Sofía had asked him to sign.

The one he had barely glanced at.

The one he had completely forgotten.

Laura slowly unfolded the paper.

"$300,000."

"Signed personally by Mr. Diego Robles."

"Payable immediately upon demand."

She looked up.

"We have been instructed to present this document tonight."

Doña Amparo grabbed her son's arm.

"Diego..."

"What exactly did you sign?"

For the first time that evening...

Diego had no answer.

And outside the mansion...

A black luxury sedan quietly pulled through the front gate.

Inside sat Sofía.

Her daughters asleep in the back seat.

Beside her...

One of the most powerful attorneys in Mexico City calmly closed a briefcase.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

Sofía looked through the mansion windows.

She could already hear raised voices.

Then she whispered,

"No..."

"I'm ready for the truth."

She opened the car door.

May you like

And walked toward the entrance.
