CHAPTER 5 — "The Investigators Opened the File… Then One Witness Walked In and Destroyed the Last Lie Diego Had Left."

The cameras never stopped rolling.

Reporters crowded the entrance of Hernández Premier Realty Group, shouting questions from every direction.

"Mr. Robles!"

"Did you forge your wife's signature?"

"Is it true you've been living off borrowed money for years?"

"Did your wife secretly finance your lifestyle?"

Security guards struggled to hold the growing crowd behind the barricades.

Diego stood frozen.

Only yesterday...

People had lined up to shake his hand.

Today...

They were waiting to watch him fall.

Then the two government investigators stepped out of the black sedan.

Neither looked interested in the cameras.

Neither said a word.

The older investigator simply held up an official badge.

"Mr. Diego Robles?"

Diego swallowed hard.

"...Yes."

"We're with the Financial Crimes Division."

"We need to ask you several questions regarding allegations of fraud, forged commercial documents, and possible financial misrepresentation."

The reporters immediately surged forward.

"What fraud?"

"Did he steal from investors?"

"Is he being arrested?"

Flash after flash illuminated Diego's terrified face.

He forced himself to smile.

"This is all a misunderstanding."

The lead investigator didn't react.

"Then you'll have no problem answering our questions."

Upstairs...

Sofía watched everything through the conference room window.

She didn't smile.

There was no satisfaction in her expression.

Only exhaustion.

Alejandro quietly closed the blinds.

"You don't have to watch."

She nodded.

"I know."

"But I spent ten years believing he would change."

She looked toward the ceiling.

"I need to see how this ends."

Her assistant entered carrying coffee.

"Ma'am..."

"The board postponed today's meetings."

"They said your family comes first."

Sofía looked down.

"My family does come first."

"My daughters."

"No one else."

Meanwhile...

Inside one of the building's private conference rooms...

Diego sat across from the investigators.

His attorney had finally arrived.

"So," the younger investigator began.

"Let's start with something simple."

"Did you personally sign these documents?"

He slid three papers across the table.

The catering agreement.

The promissory note.

The commercial loan application.

Diego hesitated.

"They look like my signature..."

The investigator interrupted.

"They are your signatures."

He placed a forensic handwriting report beside them.

"Verified."

Diego's attorney whispered,

"Answer carefully."

The older investigator opened another folder.

"Now let's discuss these."

Inside were copies of contracts submitted to multiple banks.

Every one of them claimed that Hernández Premier Realty Group stood behind Diego's business ventures.

Several contained what appeared to be Sofía's signature.

The investigator looked directly at him.

"Did your wife authorize these?"

"No."

"Did she know about them?"

"...No."

"So who signed her name?"

Diego remained silent.

His attorney placed a hand on his arm.

"You are not required to answer that."

The investigator simply nodded.

"That's your right."

Then he reached into another folder.

"We anticipated that response."

He pressed a button on a remote.

A large television screen mounted on the wall came to life.

The first image appeared.

Security footage.

Date stamped.

Two years earlier.

Inside Diego's office.

The video showed Diego practicing Sofía's signature on a legal pad.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Until the signatures matched almost perfectly.

Diego's face turned white.

His attorney stared at the screen in disbelief.

"Where..."

"Where did you get this?"

The investigator answered calmly.

"Your former accountant provided it."

At that exact moment...

The conference room door opened.

A nervous man in his late fifties stepped inside.

Gray suit.

Thin glasses.

Leather briefcase.

Diego immediately stood.

"Raúl?"

His former accountant couldn't even meet his eyes.

For fifteen years...

Raúl Mendoza had managed every financial record connected to Diego's businesses.

He knew every loan.

Every hidden debt.

Every fake invoice.

Every lie.

The investigator gestured toward an empty chair.

"Mr. Mendoza has agreed to cooperate."

Diego exploded.

"You betrayed me!"

Raúl finally looked up.

"No."

"I stopped protecting you."

Silence filled the room.

Raúl took a deep breath.

"I warned you."

"I begged you to tell the truth."

"You always said one more deal would fix everything."

"One more loan."

"One more lie."

His voice cracked.

"But the lies never stopped."

The investigator asked quietly,

"Did Mr. Robles knowingly submit forged documents?"

Raúl closed his eyes.

"...Yes."

"Were investors intentionally misled?"

"...Yes."

"Did he instruct you to hide debts?"

"...Yes."

Every answer landed like another hammer blow.

Diego buried his face in his hands.

"It's over," he whispered.

"No..."

Raúl corrected him.

"It was over the moment you chose pride over honesty."

Across town...

Doña Amparo sat alone in her mansion's rented dining room.

The television played nonstop coverage of the scandal.

She grabbed the remote and switched channels.

The same story.

Another channel.

The same story.

Again.

The same headline.

"REAL ESTATE EXECUTIVE ACCUSED OF FRAUD AFTER WIFE'S SECRET FORTUNE EXPOSED."

She turned the television off.

The silence was unbearable.

For the first time...

No friends called.

No relatives came to defend her.

Then her phone rang.

Relieved, she answered immediately.

"Hello?"

"Mrs. Robles?"

"Yes."

"This is Saint Gabriel Academy."

It was the private school attended by Emilia and Camila.

Doña Amparo smiled.

"My granddaughters—"

The principal interrupted gently.

"We're calling because Mrs. Sofía Hernández has updated the emergency contact information."

"You are no longer listed as an authorized guardian."

The smile disappeared.

"What?"

"Effective immediately."

"The children's pickup permissions have been changed."

Doña Amparo's voice shook.

"I'm their grandmother."

The principal answered kindly.

"I understand."

"But we follow the legal guardian's instructions."

The call ended.

Doña Amparo stared at the silent phone.

Only then...

Did she understand.

She hadn't just lost an argument.

She had lost access to the only innocent people who had ever truly loved her.

The little girls she had treated as burdens...

Were now beyond her reach.

That evening...

Sofía drove to school herself.

Classes had ended an hour earlier.

Emilia climbed into the back seat first.

Camila followed, hugging her favorite stuffed rabbit.

Neither girl knew everything that had happened.

They only knew Mommy had been smiling more.

As Sofía buckled Camila's seatbelt, Emilia spoke softly.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we going back to Grandma's house again?"

Sofía paused.

Then gently brushed a strand of hair away from Emilia's face.

"No."

"Never again."

Emilia looked uncertain.

"Is Grandma angry with us?"

Sofía swallowed the lump in her throat.

"No, baby."

"Grandma made choices."

"And now..."

"So have I."

Camila leaned forward from her car seat.

"Can we eat pizza tonight?"

For the first time in weeks...

Sofía laughed.

A real laugh.

"Yes."

"Extra cheese."

"And dessert?"

"Two desserts."

The girls cheered.

As the car pulled away...

Sofía looked into the rearview mirror.

Not at the road behind her.

At her daughters.

They were laughing.

Really laughing.

She realized something in that moment.

Winning wasn't exposing Diego.

Winning wasn't proving she was rich.

Winning...

Was hearing those two little girls laugh without fear.

But just as she turned onto the main road...

Her phone rang through the car's hands-free system.

Alejandro.

She answered.

"Everything okay?"

His voice was unusually serious.

"Sofía..."

"We've discovered something."

"What is it?"

"The fraud investigation uncovered a hidden offshore account."

She frowned.

"Diego's?"

"Yes."

Alejandro took a slow breath.

"But the account wasn't in his name."

"It was opened..."

"...using your late father's identity."

Sofía's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

Her father had died twelve years earlier.

"He used my father?"

Alejandro answered quietly.

"We think so."

"And if the investigators are right..."

"This case is much bigger than anyone imagined."

Sofía looked into the darkening sky.

The past she thought had been buried...

May you like

Was about to return.
